Weddings. When you’re in your twenties, it might seem like there’s no end to them, as all of your friends want to have their perfect one. In some families, the weddings are big and expensive, while others prefer to keep it plain and simple. Whatever the preference, everyone just wants to have a perfect, wonderful day. Unfortunately, that’s not always an option, certainly not when you turn out to have slightly crazy in-laws, as Louisa, the bride in ‘Another Kind of Wedding’, will soon find out.

Matthew (Jacob Tierney) and Louisa (Jessica Parker Kennedy) are getting married. They love each other a lot for sure, but their love will have to be strong if they want to survive their wedding day. What should be the most magical day of their life, is about to turn rather peculiar, when Matthew’s family arrive. Matthew and his brother Kurt (Kevin Zegers) and Sister Carrie (Jessica Paré) grew up with two mothers: Barbara (Kathleen Turner) and Tammy (Frances Fisher). No problem there, but the two of them have separated and haven’t seen or heard from each other since, and with good reason. Now, for their son’s wedding, they of course show up both – they wouldn’t want to miss it for the world – but fireworks are guaranteed. On top of that, Matthew’s brother Kurt turns out to be Louisa’s ex-boyfriend, and he’s obviously still in love with her.

Carrie may seem like the only fairly normal one in the family, and in a way she probably is. But honestly, she and her pot smoking boyfriend Misha (Luke Kirby) are far from normal too. To top it all off, there is Albert (Wallace Shawn), who is actually not really a part of the family, but came as Barbara’s date, so she could make Tammy jealous. Albert isn’t that interested in Barbara though, but rather more in the beautiful young woman by the pool of the hotel. In short, they are an interesting bunch.

Frankly, the story of this film goes nowhere at all. OK, there is a wedding, but that’s actually not the core of the story, despite what the title might suggest. The story is mostly about Matthew’s crazy family, but honestly, we didn’t find them very interesting at all. None of the characters had a decent background or storyline and the humor just isn’t that funny.

When there is nothing much to like about the story or the characters, it’s hard to be positive about the acting, but truth be told, the acting isn’t that bad in this film. Given the poor characters the actors had to work with, we’d say: job well done. The only thing we don’t quite understand is why a well-known cast such as this should choose to play in such a flimsy movie.

There are no extras on this DVD release, and we didn’t really mind either. You can just watch the film and be done with it, which is perfectly fine, as there wouldn’t have been much to add anyway. Deleted scenes and a gag reel could have been fun features, but we had enough just watching the film, so you won’t hear us complain here.

Conclusion

Another Kind of Wedding is just another kind of comedy, be it not such a good one. The story doesn’t really go anywhere and the characters have no ‘body’ to them either. We can’t really complain about the acting, but that’s about all that’s good about this film. If you like cheesy comedy without a decent storyline, go ahead and watch this, if not, stay far away from this one.
