High school can be rather hard, especially for some people. Some just don’t fit in, get bullied or have a hard time with puberty. Teenagers have a lot of issues and some of them might not have a loving home or friends to go to. But, what if the life you’re living isn’t that fulfilling and the end of the road is closer by than you think? Before I Fall will take you on this journey and let you think about your purpose in this world.

Samantha (Zoey Deutch) is a normal teenage girl with a normal family. She is in her senior year of high school, almost ready to go to college. The relationship with her parents Julie (Jennifer Beals) & Dan (Nicholas Lea) and her annoying little sister Izzy (Erica Tremblay) isn’t that great, but at least she has her friends. It’s Cupid’s Day at school and her best friend Lindsay (Halston Sage) is picking her up. Together they laugh a lot while getting their friends Ally (Cynthy Wu) and Elody (Medalion Rahimi). During this ride, Samantha gets some tips as she is going to lose her virginity with her boyfriend Rob (Kian Lawley), making her rather nervous. The day at school isn’t without trouble though. With Cupid’s Day, roses are handed out and Samantha got one she didn’t expect, while during her lunch break, the four friends pick on Juliet (Elena Kampouris), ridiculing her for the whole school. Everything is forgotten when the girls prepare for a party that night and upon arrival, the fun can start. It ends rather abruptly and they decide to go home sooner than anticipated. This was the start of a rather impossible story, as the same day is repeated over and over again.

Before I Fall 1

As the same day gets replayed multiple times, the flow is rather stable although some faster bits are added to make it less repetitive and it’s a welcome change of pace. Nevertheless, the overall flow is good and will keep you interested. At the start, the events are perfectly described so you can feel what Samantha is going through, even though it is a rather incredible subject. Don’t expect a walk in the park, as the story is quite heavy and will get you thinking. For instance, finding out the truth about certain events from the past will change both her as your perspective on the story and at the end of the movie you will realise that there are so many ways to look at a certain situation and that a specific response or action might do more harm than expected.

Acting wise, Zoey Deutch does an amazing job in this twisted story. The emotions are just dripping of the screen and her desperation is rather tangible. It can’t be easy to play a role like this but she does a perfect job. The same can be said of her co-actors as all of them have their role in making this movie better and more emotional. For instance, Halston Sage performs the perfect bitch while Samantha’s family does a wonderful job to keep up with their teenage daughter.

Before I Fall 4

It would have been nice if there were some extras on the DVD. Now, it’s just the movie and done but it is a missed opportunity to dive deeper into bullying, puberty, living a fulfilling live and what not. This might have been helpful for some people, while others might have had something on the insights of how the actress experienced such a role.

Conclusion

When your time is running out, how will people remember you? What have you achieved? Did you do your best to get everything out of the time that was provided? With Before I Fall, you won’t be going down a happy road as Samantha experiences a rather peculiar situation. She has to discover herself and unravel some dark secrets that had quite an impact in someone’s life. Are you up for discovering yourself along the way?
