Detective stories mostly revolve around the popular Sherlock Holmes, but what if there was yet another investigator roaming around? Bertram Fiddle might not think he’s one, but he’s always looking for yet another adventure. In this second instalment of the game, you can continue this journey from this chirpy guy, although he will need the help from his friend Gavin.

Story

In this second episode we continue with our good ol’ friend Bertram at his new job. His path has led him to a soap factory and he has to get a daily quota by calling people and selling these goods. His boss, Mr Dulsworth,  finds him sleeping yet again, while Bertram still didn’t obtain his quota. Before he can leave, he has to find those last buyers and get a stamp. Not too long after, our friend Bertram gets a mystery call. He has to investigate his boss and report back to Dulsworth’s mother.

It becomes clear quite fast that something fishy is going on as the office is empty and your boss has disappeared into thin air. Your investigation might not be that fruitful, you still have to inform Mrs Dulsworth. Things go south even more afterwards and you’re accused of murdering someone. Will you get out of this one? Bertram and Gavin will have to do their best to clear your name.

As this is a point-and-click adventure game, there has to be at least some narrative available and the game does not disappoint. You’ll be grinding through several funny conversations and remarks, in the style of the previous instalment.

Graphics

Normal is not a word that comes into mind when looking at this game. The developers chose to go for a comical style with a lot of funny winks. Although it all might seem rather simple, there are quite some details added. The environment is clad in the same color schemes but the characters stand out due to their clothing and outlining. During conversations the facial features change, making everything that much more interesting.

Sound

This game has both great music as voice acting. You will be guided by fitting tracks while venturing the city and trying to find the real culprit. Don’t think there aren’t any sound effects either, as you will be guided by several jingles while getting items or solving puzzles. It all adds to the comical effect and makes it a nice entity.

Voice acting wise, there are a lot of small sentences and full conversations and both of them are fully guided by voices, which makes it really enjoyable to play. Each of the voices really fit with the character and you can hear the emotions in them.

Gameplay

Bertram Fiddle episode 2: A Bleaker Predicklement is a point-and-click adventure game where you have to help your old chap. He stands for a lot of difficulties and you need to get out of several peculiar situations. To do so, you have to find certain items to help you on your way and continue your journey while at other times, you need to solve a puzzle before you can go on your merry way. It is hard to see which items or characters are clickable but you have your trusty spacebar for that. Pressing this bar will highlight all of the possibilities, making it a bit easier. Sometimes items are useless separately, but you can combine certain utensils to make something new, which can be used to proceed.

At the beginning of the game, you only have Bertram at your disposal but eventually his friend Gavin also enters the scene. You can switch between both characters or sometimes you can just use the brute force of your friend. Together you get everything done.

There isn’t much more to the game than these mechanics. The puzzles themselves might be a bit harder at times but any seasoned point-and-click fanatic or puzzle lover will like what they get. As this is the second episode, you might think you will miss out on the story, but less is though. Yes, there are some references here and there, but you’re still able to chip in. There seems to be multiple bugs though, even game-breaking ones, when you take a look at the comments on the Steam page. The developers will surely tackle these issues, but it might be a good reminder before jumping in.
