After defeating Iron Nail and his associate Dr. Mindbubble, Steven finds himself completely helpless, as the supers-soldier serum is no longer in his body, which caused him to age rapidly. Now he is an old man, no longer able to fulfill his duties as Captain America, who was often deemed the leader of the Avengers. It doesn’t help that a new threat is already lurking behind the corner, one that never stopped haunting him since he returned back to our dimension.

Captain America #008 Banner

Steven Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, the man who once led The Avengers, is now a sickly old man, who lies in bed, watching the news all day long. Nonetheless, his life is about to change once again, as a portal appears in Central Park, which grants passage to none other than Arnim Zola, who clearly has returned to finish his ploy to invade our planet. Not only Zola has appeared, but a mysterious warrior has entered the lair of The Avengers, looking for Steven. Even though Thor, Iron Man and The Hulk are clashing their fists at the bizarre looking warrior, it seems they can’t stop him from reaching the elderly Captain America.

This part of the story moves rather quickly, as this small ‘arc’ is seemingly wrapped up in the span of this one bundle. You’ll see Zola appear, and disappear before you know it, but the impact he makes is one that will once again last a lifetime for those who were affected. Rick Remender doesn’t hand out too much information on how Zola finally made it to our planet, but he does give some intel about other events that ended abruptly in the original story arc.

The illustrations in this issue are a tad less rugged than the original arc revolving around Zola, but they still have a certain faded color palette that is reminiscent to said storyline. The characters themselves have rounder and more likeable features, making all the characters somewhat prettier than they are often depicted. Overall this style works great for the story at hand.

Conclusion

Captain America #008 is a great new interlude to a new chapter that revolves around the senior Steven Rogers, the way the Avengers work, and how Arnim Zola once again makes an appearance in Steven’s life, and takes away something precious, just like he has done in the past. If you were fond of the Zola arc, you’ll be happy to hear that things aren’t over just yet.
