As we spent countless hours in Bolivia to stop the merciless actions of El Sueno and his Santa Blanca Cartel, Ubisoft has planned a new mission for Nomad and his Ghosts. This time our operatives are sent to Destination: Auroa, a fictional island that lies near the Pacific Ocean where a dangerous group has grown and has become a threat to the world. With our beta-key and packed with equipment, we traveled to Auroa to start a new adventure.

As the beta starts, you will be able to fully customize your character as we have seen in Wildlands. When your character is ready, you will be sent out with your squad to put a hold on Cole D. Walker and his gang. This villain is a former Ghost that has gone rogue and formed an army that are equipped with the latest high-tech equipment. Unfortunately, your chopper is taken down and your crew will be separated on the island. Hunted by an unknown armed force, you have to find your team and try to survive. The beta allowed us to play two story missions and a couple of side missions to explore the free open-world of Auroa and get intel about the Wolves.

From the start, you will encounter the newest and most important feature of the game: the new gear system. Like in Ubisoft’s other franchise your gear will determine your survival chances in the battles. You will be notified when you encounter a stronger force than your current equipment can handle. Up to you to face the challenge or avoid combat. When you are scouting, the stronger units will be presented with a skull to indicate that their gear level is significantly higher than yours. Luckily, Breakpoint offers that bit more of realism. Whatever the level of human targets, they can be eliminated with one bullet, or two if they wear a helmet. But be warned, stronger forces can spot you more easily and are very lethal. Like the game’s predecessor, the missions and areas of the island will be based on gear level. As you progress you can specialize your character in different classes like medic or heavy arms specialist. Every class has specials skills that can be used in combat.

The game will offer a co-op mode that will affect your singleplayer experience. If you play alone, you won’t have AI buddies. Instead, a drone will assist you to bring the missions to success. In Breakpoint, you will be hunted making survival is a big part of the game. To add more realism, Ubisoft integrated an injury system that will affect you in different ways. Injuries can slow you down and mess with your aiming skills. You will be able to use bandages to recover a bit and applying these will also make them visible on your character, which is a cool touch.

Visually the beta was very decent. Like Wildlands’ Bolivia, the island of Auroa is an open-world environment with different locations like snowy peaks, urban areas, rainforests, and rocky hillsides. The new interface and UI are redesigned. A rotation wheel for selecting equipment like grenades, first aid kits, … is a very good feature. Overall the beta ran well while we were engaged in a heavy gunfight. Multiplayer wasn’t available in the beta but Ubisoft will soon publish more info with the release date coming closer.

Conclusion

The Beta offered a short but clean overall experience to discover the open world and its dangerous enemies. The new gear system, classes, and raids are interesting but we have to see how it develops in the full game. The presentation and environments look decent with some minor setbacks and weird character movements.

Ghost recon: Breakpoint will be launched on the fourth of October on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. The players who pre-ordered the Gold, the Ultimate or the collector’s edition will have a three-day early access to the game.
