Back in the day of the PlayStation 3, multiplayer was completely free. It merely needed a stable internet connection. PlayStation Plus was then more of a feature that was a cool thing to have, as it gave you free games every month and cool discounts. Now it still does that, however on the current generation, you need the PlayStation Plus to access multiplayer content some games provide.
