PlayStation’s end of year gaming event shows off impressive list of upcoming PS4 titles

PlayStation users are in for a treat, with many high quality titles coming to the console for the first time sometime during the next year. At 3rd-strike, we were lucky enough to test out several upcoming PlayStation titles at the end-of-year PlayStation gaming event. Here are some of the games you should be excited for in 2016.

1. Shadow of the Beast

This God of War-like sidescroller was first released in 1989, but has undergone more than a few transitions since then. While the remake does follow the story of the original release, the new Shadow of the Beast will impress players with its attractive appearance and great flow. Dynamic backgrounds and an interesting level and character design make this game very aesthetically pleasing, while also adding to the game’s mystical atmosphere. The game looks and feels so 3D that it’s easy to forget you’re playing a sidescroller, and an adaptive AI as well as quick time events keep combat from being too simplistic, even in the alpha phase.

Shadow of the Beast follows the story of a monster-like servant, who struggles just as much with the enemies he finds on his path as he does with the chains that bind him to his master. This title will come to PS4 in 2016, an exact release date is not known as of yet.

2. What remains of Edith Finch

A personal favourite, What remains of Edith Finch managed to charm and entice nearly everyone present. The game allows players to take on different points of view, as it tells the stories of various members of the Finch family. In its core each story deals with death, and while this does give the game an eerie and sometimes almost scary vibe, What remains of Edith Finch isn’t a horror game. More so, it’s a touching and honest game that even with a spoken narrative excels at the “show, don’t tell” principle. At one point, players take on the role of the family cat, and as the little bell on your neck jingles with every step, you realise that Giant Sparrow is doing a great job at mixing realism and dream-like elements with this game.

What remains of Edith Finch leaves the player wanting more, and the demo felt too short, as if one were to stop reading an old children’s book before finding out what happens in the final pages. Definitely one to look forward to, What remains of Edith Finch will be released on PS4 in 2016.

3. Gravity Rush Remastered

Fans of the popular Vita game have a lot to look forward to. While the remastered version of the game keeps its manga-like art style and attractive protagonist, Bluepoint Games uses the PS4’s powerful system to its full advantage with new gameplay mechanisms that affect gravity even more. Smoother frame rates and performance improvements are guaranteed, as the game comes to PS4 in February 2016.

4. Alienation

Alienation is the successor to Dead Nation, but is much more capturing. As another top-down shooter, Alienation manages to switch things up with a smart AI, pleasing explosions and vivid, attractive visuals. Midlevel challenges make for an interesting gameplay experience. Alienation will have a co-op mode, but will also provide the player with plenty of things to do on their own. This upcoming PS4 title will be a true game changer for fans of the genre.

5. Fat Princess Adventures

Not everything needs to be serious all the time, and Fat Princess Adventures is the perfect example of how a casual RPG can entice even hardcore fans of the genre. With great controls, a decent storyline and plenty of opportunities for customisation, Fat Princess Adventures follows the traditional RPG recipe, but spices it up with a lot of tongue-in-cheek humour. The funny dialogue and great voice acting are the cherry on top of the cake. This is a game that doesn’t take itself or its genre too seriously. As in most RPG’s, eating heals the player after they have taken damage, but eating when the health bar is full means your character will burst out of their clothes and temporarily run around as a squishy Hulk. Little touches such as the “awesome sauce” power and your character’s sarcastic comments make this game extremely fun, and its co-op mode is something we’re definitely looking forward to.

Fat Princess Adventures will be released on PS4 in 2016, but has already been put on our personal wishlist.
