Starpoint Gemini 3 is the third installment of the Starpoint Gemini series. This game is currently in Early Access on Steam, so sadly,  it’s not a complete game yet. The game features what seems to be a very interesting story about Jonathan Bold who seems to related to one of the most important people in the galaxy that is rumored to have died recently. The factions in this game are hunting his relatives to kill them or capture them to take advantage of their lineage.  You start with a scene on a small spaceship which is stolen by you to escape a dangerous situation. This ship has a very peculiar AI as control unit on board called ADAH, which will have many weird but funny conversations with captain Bold or captain Quilt as he calls himself to hide his identity after hijacking this ship.

The story of the game seems very intriguing, with fully voiced conversations and cutscenes. Sadly, these aren’t perfect yet. What’s worse is that when you’re really getting into the story and you seem to be past the tutorial part of the game, a message appears saying this is the end of the story so far in this version of the game. This feels much too soon for the game, even if it’s in Early Access. If you’re purely focused on the game’s story, you could easily go through it all in less than an hour.

The galaxy looks very nice, with a lot of detail to be found almost everywhere. Planets are very big and look nice from a distance, but when you come close, the graphics will be stretched out, letting these planets lose their beauty. Let’s hope this is something that will be fixed in the ongoing development of the game. When following the story, you’ll see captain Bold talking to numerous characters he encounters on his journey. Some characters look quite nice, while captain Bold himself looks very bad with little detail and horrible design. We expect this to get better as the development of the game has progressed and a few updates have been released.

The conversations in the cutscenes show a lot of promise for the game’s story content, but what’s irritating is that the voices aren’t synchronized with the movements in the cutscenes. The movements seem to be behind all the time, making you focus more on what you hear and the subtitles, if you’ve turned these on. The music and sounds used in this game all sound quite perfect for the game’s setting.

Starpoint Gemini 3 is an action RPG that takes place in outer space and lets you explore many different planetary systems. The gameplay of Starpoint Gemini is already pretty good for the current state of the game. The game also features full controller support that works great. We preferred playing the game with a controller, rather than playing it with a mouse and keyboard, but that’s for everyone to choose. You can fly through space at a normal speed, a boosted speed that utilizes a bar of energy and a travel speed that can be used infinitely to traverse those long distances. While in travel speed, you can’t use your ship’s weapons, so when you encounter enemies, you’ll need to stop travel speed to engage these enemies. Moving around while shooting at enemies is quite easily done as you can lock-on to enemies to keep your weapons focused on your enemy. The controls take a short while to master, so the game is pretty user-friendly at this point.

As you check out the Starchart, you’ll see that there are three different planetary systems that are going to be present in the full game. Each system has multiple sectors you can explore which will feature different planets in each sector. At the time of writing, there are only two sectors where you’ll be taken to with the story. You can travel to several other sectors, but not all of them are available to enter at this point. Starpoint Gemini features multiple factions that have their own roles in this universe. Currently, there are eight factions known to be in the game, but only four will be encountered in the current build of the game. These are the Dogons, Outlaws, Liberland, and MultiOps. The others will be added in the future as the story continues after more content updates.

The game’s Steam page states that you can extensively upgrade your ship, but the upgrading of your ship won’t be explained anywhere. You can find upgrades for your ship when docked on planets and big stations. You won’t find that many upgrades for your ship and they won’t really improve your ship, they will mostly just alter the stats of your ship in a different combination.

Sadly, at this point, there’s not much to do in the game besides the main quest that isn’t all that big yet. You can search and fight against outlaws to loot their cargo and unlock new blueprints for items that are needed to craft other items or can be sold for money. Other than that, you can explore space, but not much more.

Conclusion

As the game is quite incomplete at this point, you shouldn’t expect all that much from the game now. As the game is now, we definitely think that this game has much promise for the future as development continues. If you’re keen on checking this game out, it’s definitely worth investing your money to take a peek while the game doesn’t cost as much as it will when it’s completed.
