Back in 2019, Thrustmaster released its T.Racing Scuderia Ferrari Edition headset, which received a fairly positive review on our site. Those wanting to catch up on the ins- and outs of this device, can click here to read our original review. We concluded that the headset had a very nice design, was extremely comfortable, but lacked a few features to justify its price tag and didn’t include 7.1 surround sound. To make this attractive device relevant in our current gaming landscape, Thrustmaster decided to give the device a DTS upgrade. While this sounds nice on paper, we’ll dive into the specifics below, which clarifies that it’s not an immediate permanent upgrade.

Truth be told, this review can be kept fairly short. Our opinion of the overall headset has not changed, with it being very comfortable and pleasing to the eye. The design is top-notch quality, and even during longer gaming sessions, you can enjoy extreme comfort, even with the device’s bulky size. We also stated the sound quality was very crisp and crystal clear, but it didn’t have the fancy 7.1 surround sound available. This is where the DTS upgrade comes into play and will pretty much replace the normal 7.1 functions other devices have. The environmental sound upgrade is phenomenal, especially when using the T.Racing Scuderia for many different genres of games. When buying the device brand new, you’ll get a code for one year’s worth of the DTS upgrade. If you wish to prolong this experience, you’ll have to pay again, but then to unlock it permanently.

While we reckon Thrustmaster is not earning too much on the upgrade itself, as well as these ‘memberships’, it feels like quite a lot to do and/or pay to keep this headset in pristine condition. It’s very nice that an upgrade has been done for this lovely device, but it should have been a permanent one from the start for newly produced batches, with the option to upgrade the experience of those who already owned this device from the start.

Conclusion

Thrustmaster’s T.Racing Scuderia Ferrari Edition is still a very nice device, and this upgrade might just be what pushes the device to a better spot on the market. We do believe that this DTS inclusion should be permanent from the start, as the device is already premium-priced for its functionalities. Overall though, we liked the device from the beginning, and early adopters can still buy the upgrade as well, making sure you don’t have to buy the device all over again. We end up with mixed feelings but are still pleased with the device.
