We have discussed Elysium not that long ago as one of the new Sony Pictures Home Entertainment films on 4K UHD. We very much enjoyed the film, and it still looked very impressive for a nearly 8-year-old movie. The extras were nice, and the overall story proved to be quite enjoyable. Nonetheless, leaving a dystopian future behind, we dive into 2012, a movie about the year the world was supposedly coming to an end. The 2009 film has been mainly praised for its visual effects, with fairly lukewarm responses to the overall story value. As always, for 4K UHD releases, we’ll look at this release itself, rather than diving into the traditional review format for new movie releases.

2012 presents us with one of the possibilities of how the end of the world would look like. This is mainly a story about the survival of different groups of people, amidst a lot of disasters. While the story may be somewhat captivating for some, the movie is more a display of the CGI technology that was top-notch at the time. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it might just not entice every viewer to spend more than two hours viewing this film. That being said, this nearly 12-year-old piece of cinema holds up surprisingly well, and actually still looks better than certain modern productions. The 4K edition makes this into a true spectacle on a proper setup.

Even though the movie does not always hold up well outside of its graphic spectacle, we were curious to see what extras would be on the 4K UHD edition of the film. Sadly, the movie itself only has its trailers to further explore, which is an outright shame. A fun addition, however, is the inclusion of the Discovery Channel documentary about the end of the world. This is a very nice inclusion, that might even out the lack of special features about the movie.

Conclusion

Arguably, Elysium is the better 4K UHD release of the month, 2012 will still be a nice visual spectacle for those into disaster or apocalyptic movies. While the film has received mixed reviews over the years, we were quite impressed with the addition of the documentary in the extras section, but then again saddened to have nothing tangible about the actual movie. Overall still a nice release to get if you were a very big fan of this film, if not, it’s not a bad idea to wait to see the price drop a tiny bit first.
