LEGO Jurassic World (Switch) – Review
LEGO Jurassic World was released nearly four years ago when we had the chance to try it out on the Xbox One. The game proved to be entertaining with a few new fun twists and turns, while also following the typical formula of the witty LEGO games. This iteration presented us with controllable dinosaurs, which was something quite pleasant. You could complete tasks with these massive creatures and it was certainly fun to be at the helm of such a mastodon. While the game is called LEGO Jurassic World, we were able to relive the story of the original trilogy as well.
Story
The game has four storylines to explore. You can opt to play through the original Jurassic Park trilogy first, or dive into the story of the first Jurassic World movie. The game follows the flow of the movie, albeit with some child-friendly changes in terms of things that happen in the cinematics. You’ll get to see the rise and downfall of the first park, to pretty much see the same happen with the second park as well. The story is presented with a lot of dialogue and cutscenes, all using the original sound samples of the films. There is some dialogue added during the actual gameplay that was not a part of the movies.
Graphics
Even though the Switch has a lower performance rate than the Xbox One or the PlayStation 4, the Switch version does not have to shy away from its other versions. The game looks good, the colors are crisp and there are no performance issues. The game follows the typical LEGO style, where every object has been LEGO-fied with realistic backdrops. There’s a lot of diversity in the backgrounds and the character design has been handled well. The menus still look a bit cheap, but that’s only a minor remark.
Sound
LEGO Jurassic World uses sound samples from the original movies. You’ll be able to enjoy the actual dialogues that occurred in the films, but you’ll notice a drop in quality when playing through the Jurassic Park trilogy first. It’s clear that the developers had to work with old(er) sound samples, which is also audible, especially when they’re mixing in new dialogues to fill the speech in some levels. Jurassic World has crystal clear sound compared to the Jurassic Park trilogy. The background music also features tracks from the original films, which makes this a very authentic experience.
Gameplay
LEGO Jurassic World is an adventure game in which you’ll have a plethora of characters to choose from, to solve small puzzles, collect LEGO studs and to replay many levels to collect all the unlockables and collectibles the game has to offer. The overall concept is extremely simple and is also fun to play with a friend in local co-op.
As always, the game is divided into two portions; the actual levels and the overworld. In the overworld, you’ll often have to solve several puzzles in order to be able to access the different levels. This also allows you to collect LEGO studs in the overworld, without any real pressure. The levels also follow a simple format from going to one location to another, while solving small puzzles to open blockades. The LEGO games series are perfect for young and old, and this translates well into the gameplay of the game.
These games are only fun for those seeking to relive a famous movie and see how the LEGO world makes it look. Other players will love the replay value of these titles, as you’ll often have to unlock certain characters to access new areas in earlier levels for certain collectibles. For others, it might be a frustrating aspect that you can’t access everything a level has to offer the first time you play it. Overall the formula is certainly fun, and we reckon the replay value was added because you’ll plow through these games quite quickly when you go from one level to the next.
Conclusion
LEGO Jurassic World is still a successful entry in the LEGO series of games. You’ll be able to relive the stories of the original movies, as well as the first part of the Jurassic World movies, all in a children-friendly format and with some witty humor added to what is going on during the story. The gameplay follows the same formula as the other LEGO games, albeit with the additions of controllable dinosaurs, which certainly add a bit of fun to the equation.
