The Smurfs: Season 9 (DVD) – Series Review
It’s been a bittersweet journey so far when it comes to rewatching all of the seasons of The Smurfs. We loved seeing these cartoons again, some remastered, some in very dodgy quality, and a few somewhere in-between. We enjoyed the nostalgia factor, but overall the releases have not brought that much new to the table. Even so, if you have stuck with this collection so far, there’s nothing stopping you to get the ninth and final season on DVD.
In the ninth season, nothing has really changed as to how the series is presented. We get to go on short adventures, some in the village itself, others in an ever-growing world of magic and wonders. We noticed that some stories are a bit longer than the earlier season, which is actually quite nice as it fleshes out certain adventures more.
While growing a bit more consistent from time to time, this ninth season offers a moderate quality of image for its entire season. We don’t see extra dips, but we also don’t see any extremely clear footage either. The audio quality seems to be more stable this time around, however, and the actors have grown more accustomed to voicing the characters here.
Conclusion
At this point we may sound like a stuck record, especially considering we’re grading all of these boxes the same. Nonetheless, our initial remarks still stand for this ninth and final season, where we noted that some episodes look crisp and clear, and others look as if they are directly ripped from an old VHS tape. We do feel that the overall series is still very much worth it, and deserves a proper remaster, rather than a simple rerelease. Still, the asking price for each individual season is still quite fair, so it won’t really break the bank.
