Frostpunk: Complete Collection – Review
Over the last three years, we have given Frostpunk a lot of coverage. We have covered the original PC release, the console edition, but also two DLCs; The Last Autumn and On The Edge, respectively. As a whole, the game, and its port and expansions have received great scores, and we were quite happy to see that the DLC has properly made its way to consoles as well. Now, players will either be able to expand their original experience further or simply go for the Complete Collection of the title. As we have already covered all the content, we will not be diving into a full review but rather discuss how relevant the game is, three years after its initial release. Those wanting to read up on the base game for PC and console, or the DLCs, be sure to click on the aforementioned titles to go to their respective reviews.
In all honesty, there is not much more we can say than we already discussed in the older reviews. Frostpunk is a premium-quality city builder with an amazing (albeit depressing) setting. The game still plays smoothest on PC, but the console port has been amazingly handled. We did encounter a few moments where accurately placing roads or buildings proved to be a bit of a hassle, but other than that, everything proves to be quite straightforward. You’ll need some time to actually adjust to every option the game throws at you, and certain scenarios basically spice things up or change up basic mechanics entirely. This keeps the entire experience fresh, and there’s more than enough challenge to be found when playing through the different scenarios.
We actually do like that the developers opted for different possible storylines in this game, even though the actual story content is limited. Sometimes you may find yourself to be the last colony on Earth, while at other times you’ll be playing as a colony that reports to London, or you could even opt to play the scenario before the world froze over. This variety is what makes Frostpunk stand out from the competition, as it does try to reinvent itself with its different scenarios, and not just unlock more buildings, or add a few cosmetic items to the equation. This is what made us give the game repeated high scores on the site, and this is why we still very much like revisiting this title. The content is great, even if some events may be a bit random, or the fact that it still contains minor bugs at times.
Conclusion
Frostpunk: Complete Collection is very much worth investing in if you’re a fan of games such as this. The post-apocalyptic setting and engaging mechanics will entice die-hard city builders to press on, to unlock and play all the different scenarios. The game’s overall atmosphere is heavy, which is also what makes it unique and engaging. Those who have the original version, are probably better off purchasing the season pass or the scenarios they like, rather than buying the complete version on a different platform. While a solid investment, the price tag that comes with this one is fairly high.

[…] Frostpunk games are seen as hard-core city-building RTS games, where surviving the harsh environment is the main objective for the player. The tension in the game lies in the possibility of something going wrong at any minute. We also hope that, judging by the footage we’ve seen so far, the story might also play a bigger role in the upcoming sequel. For now, a tiny bit of new footage is viewable in the latest developer video, which focuses on building the city and the dangers of those constructions. One of those dangers mentioned is the pollution of housing areas by industrial buildings, but you can also use other things to your advantage such as buildings that shield others from the cold. It’s clear that on the 20th of September when Frostpunk 2 releases for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Mac, and PC, you will need to be strategic with your placements to survive. […]
