Classic games and titles inspired by older titles are seeing a rise in popularity during these last few years. The saying ‘they don’t make ’em like they used to’ seems fitting, yet nothing beats a new game that was made in close resemblance to the classics. Forgive Me Father is a game best described as DOOM but with a priest in the lead. Here you play as a churchman who finds himself in a rather unfortunate setting.
Don’t think that this game is an FPS with a protagonist that constantly screams cheesy one-liners of the lord. No, it’s better, your character is in shock due to the events unfolding around him and asks for forgiveness from his god. In the beginning, the priest will be scared, claiming that he is killing these monsters solely in self-defense, and as the game goes on, he takes it upon himself to cleanse the city of these monsters. At the moment there is a story present in the game, but you must piece this together by finding the many articles, pictures, and items in the world. Don’t worry, these will pause the game, so you don’t get mauled to death when you accidentally pick one up during a fight.
Talking about screaming one-liners, there is sadly no voice acting in the game. The main focus was pointed towards implementing high-quality sound effects for enemies, weapons, and the kick-ass soundtrack. This is especially true if you love that hard-hitting rock music from older FPS games. Every time the action kicks in, the guitars and drums play loudly, which proves to be a great backdrop while you mow down crowds of monsters with a grinning smile.
Players that have been around for quite some time, or those that have experienced older FPS games, will notice that the game draws inspiration from big titles such as DOOM, System Shock, and all the other famous Boomer Shooters. The game is set in a 3D environment, while assets are pixilated 2D models. Opting to mix both styles works well and there is no loss of image quality. This game could really pass off as a lost game from the 90s, and it even looks great on a large monitor.
Forgive Me Father was built on a simple concept, namely that of the old school FPS game, or Boomer Shooter, how they call it these days. You make your way through many enemies, searching for keys to get to the end location. The gameplay is simple and fun, yet the game brings something unique to the table. Every enemy has an alternate form, so not only do the standard enemies come in different shapes and sizes, most of them transform if you hit them in the right spot. Some might split into two after receiving enough damage, others will lose their ranged weapon and some will even use a spare head after you blow the first one to smithereens.
Once you have destroyed enough monsters, you will level up. This is so you can upgrade your equipment and character in the skill tree. For the moment, you already have some fun upgrades to play with, such as more powerful weapons, upgraded specials, and more ammo. The game will be filled with many levels, enemies, and weapons, once it releases. For now, however, you can enjoy two whole chapters. These chapters contain enough levels and are fun to play in short bursts.
Conclusion
Forgive Me Father is the retro FPS game that brings a few modern mechanics to the table. This blend of classic Boomer Shooter inspiration and gameplay-enhancing mechanics makes Forgive Me Father a rather unique and fun experience. The graphics and sounds are both amazing and the kickass rock soundtrack is like a perfect harmony when you’re mowing down hordes of ghouls and other monsters.
