Outriders Worldslayer – Review
It’s been slightly over a year since we took a closer look at Outriders, Square Enix’s looter shooter. We found the game to be an okay experience that didn’t bring that much new to the genre, except for its cool setting and somewhat original story. The game did have solid mechanics but it felt like more of the same that we had seen from other games with this setup. Nonetheless, blasting the opposition with friends proved to be a lot of fun, even for the game’s fairly short duration. Now, the Worldslayer expansion has been released, which basically offers more of the same, albeit with more endgame content and more customization options.
The story kind of takes the backseat for this expansion, as you’re just slaughtering enemies all the time to reach your next objective. Dialogues prove to be very short in Worldslayer, and as a whole, it just feels too short to give this entire new ‘storyline’ a proper meaning. Nonetheless, the cheesy delivery still remains the same, and we reckon a lot of gamers will not be buying this DLC for its story content. The new antagonist and the overall setting still prove to be quite interesting, but it’s definitely not the focus of this release.
The overall offset and formula remain the same in Worldslayer, as you’ll just be battling huge waves of enemies, with a fair few boss battles thrown in the mix to spice things up. The game still proves to be the most fun with friends, as you’ll be able to aim for better gear then. New gear is also present with better stats and the option to add even more mods. The latter is quite interesting to amp up your damage even further. On top of that, you’ll also get the Ascension and Pax skills trees. The Ascension skill tree allows you to level up your character with passive upgrades, very much akin to Diablo III’s paragon system. The Pax skill tree will enable you to specialize your chosen ‘Path’ even further. You may opt to add a few more offensive skills to the mix, or perhaps you wish to go for a more defensive approach. Experimenting with different builds is also heavily rewarded here, as you can reset these new skill trees at will. This means that you could even change aspects of your build on the fly if you are playing with a different group of players.
You’re getting fun endgame content, but it might not be enough to justify the very high price tag that comes with the Worldslayer expansion. You’ll be dishing out almost 40 USD/EUR for a fairly short expansion that basically unlocks a more interesting endgame experience. Of course, you can do your best to gather even more loot, especially with the new gear class, but other than that, it’s just more of the same.
Conclusion
Outriders Worldslayer is a fun expansion for those still dwelling around on the surface of Enoch. Players craving for some extra endgame content will probably be able to sink their teeth into this DLC for a fair few hours. Those looking for a fun and engaging story will probably be quite disappointed with what’s on offer here. Nonetheless, the DLC offers fun new gear, new passive bonuses, and a lot more enemies to kill. We only wished it came with a significantly lower price tag.
