The Superior Spider-Man #002 – Comic Book Review
Peter Parker is still trapped within the body of Dr. Octavious, otherwise known as Dr. Octopus, whilst the miscreant has taken over Peter’s body. Even though Peter teamed up with villains, hoping to overcome the imposter by defeating his own body, which has the powers of Spider-Man, things aren’t going that swimmingly. Nonetheless, Peter isn’t an octo-pussy who goes down without a fight, and thus he will fight with all the might and intellect the dying body of Dr. Octopus still has left.
With Peter Parker only having one more chance of recovering his body, he tries to lead his newly found allies into a desperate alley, namely the base of The Avengers, as he would be able to come up with something there. Nonetheless, seeing Octavius is highly intelligent himself, he expects the desperate Parker to show up, allowing him to foil his plans. Octavius does not want to take any chances, and thus decides to fight Peter in a dirty fashion, hoping he will get distracted enough so he would be an easy target to deal the finishing blow to. It seems Doc Ock iss correct, as mere moments later he stands on top of the dying body of Peter Parker, who is funnily enough housing Octavius’ old, dying body.
When Parker’s life starts flashing before his eyes, it seems both parties did more than merely change bodies, as they also share memories and even in this case, emotions. Due to this, Octavius has a change of heart and promises to be a better Spider-Man, nonetheless still aiming to be superior to other heroes and enjoy Peter’s life to its fullest extent. Mary Jane is his next target, as Peter’s memories push him towards her, even though he is out for the prize, rather than the love. That being said, it seems Peter isn’t completely out of his life, yet.
After a very explosive beginning of the bundle, the pace soon slows down, showing how Doc Ock is trying to get his new life on track, now Peter is out of the picture. Nonetheless, this album still has enough action sequences to keep things interesting. Dan Slott keeps the story rather interesting, even though he takes a step back from the action.
As with many Marvel comics, different illustrators work on different issues of one and the same series, which proves to be interesting, when bought separately, but sometimes a bit confusing and odd when having a bundle such as this one. Even though the overall quality of the illustrations is simply superb, in combination with the colors used, there are rather big differences when it comes to style. Of course this is still quite nicely done, but some might be bothered by it.
Conclusion
The Superior Spider-Man #002 proves to be the true start of the series, as Peter is now ‘finally’ out of the picture, allowing Dr. Octopus to completely take over his life, without any resistance. Seeing how he experiences his transition from super-villain to superhero is very interesting. We can’t wait to see how this ‘new Peter’ will cope with his hero duty.
