Iron Man #002 – Comic Book Review
After the death of Tony Stark’s old friend Maya, who invented the Extremis virus, Iron Man was roaming around the world to find the different kits of said virus. While Tony was successful in recovering almost all sets, two of them remain in the hands of strangers, one of them at least. Not only the Extremis virus is what’s on Tony’s mind, but also his legacy. We’ll suit up once more, for another iron-hard adventure.
Tony still has to retrieve two Extremis kits, where one is located in the catacombs that run beneath Paris, but has already created 13 ‘Enhanciles’, which are people who have been mutated by the virus. While there is no way to know if these Enhanciles are truly evil or not, the chance these things were made for the good of mankind is highly unlikely. Nonetheless, Tony dives in, without calling for backup, which is quite a silly plan as these mutants posses superhuman powers.
The second kit is with Tony’s old associate, Eli, who decided to conduct his research in outer space, hoping to genetically modify human beings to be able to survive the conditions of outer space. While this would normally cost generations worth of research, the Extremis kit allows him to do it in a ridiculously fast pace. Even though it’s not certain that this kit will serve evil purposes, the poor protection of Eli’s station makes it an easy target for super-villains, who could easily wipe away all of humankind with it. Reluctantly Iron Man heads into space to retrieve the final set of the Extremis virus.
Just like the previous bundle, each of the individual issues in this album handles its own case, and are is fairly calm, with one action sequence which is the pivoting point of the case. Overall things are interesting but a tad more action would suit the flamboyant Tony Stark a bit better. Kieron Gillen still trots along in the same style of the previous bundle.
As the designing team has remained the same, Greg Land and Jay Leisten still present us with rather detailed illustrations, albeit without too many whistles and bells, or smaller, more subtle details. GURU eFX still ops for rather glossy paintbrush colors, which make everything feel a tad more modern than the average comic book.
Conclusion
Iron Man #002 is not only a rather conclusive piece for the Extremis virus, but also for Tony’s plans beyond his normal earthly career. Overall things move at a rather relaxed pace in this issue, but fans of Iron Man will surely have an amusing experience, especially with a cliffhanger that seems rather promising.
