Even though Apocalypse has been destroyed years ago, it seems he is back, albeit as someone else who wants to bear the same name. This means the Avengers will not only have their image problems to solve while defeating Red Skull’s forces, but they will also have a godly presence to keep at bay from destroying the world as they know it. It seems this third bundle of the Uncanny Avengers by the Standaard Uitgeverij is going to explosive, destructive and above all exciting. Avengers, assemble once more.

Uncanny Avengers #003 Banner

When the next successor of Apocalypse steps up to the plate, things aren’t going as smooth as it seems. Even though he was able to confront the Celestial, who would appoint him the next Apocalypse, things turn sour when Uriel and Eimin Worthington show up out of the blue. Archangel’s (Warren Worthington) children are the righteous heirs of the Apocalypse name but they had vanished into the future, where they were trained by Kang the Conqueror, who modified both beings into murder machines. Seeing they destroy the Celestial right after they appear, things turn rather chaotic and by destroying a being of such godly proportions, they make sure the Celestials will come back to exact their revenge on the Earth and its inhabitants.

Meanwhile the Avengers are occupying themselves with their image, as the world is still fearsome of the mutants that now find themselves among the Avengers. Not only is Red Skull still causing a fuss, making sure normal humans turn on their mutant fellow men, but the last press event for the Avengers has caused a negative image for the superhero group, as Rogue punched another mutant to death on live television, even though she was simply defending her allies. If this wasn’t bad enough already, it seems that Thor and Wolverine also know more about the debacle with Uriel and Eimin.

The flow of this bundle is rather rapid as there is a lot of action, but also a lot of information you’ll have to process over the course of the three issues bundled in this third omnibus. You’ll learn more about Archangel’s offspring and Thor and Wolverine’s shady past that might have caused the angelic duo to choose this path of destruction. Rick Remender keeps things very interesting and exciting, but it will be a rather heavy pill to swallow by the end of this bundle, especially with the heaps of information thrown at you.

Overall the illustrations are done nicely, but sometimes things are more reminiscent of sketches, rather than full-blown detailed illustrations. While this style suits the story, especially with the chaos the Avengers are thrown in, things sometimes lack a certain amount of detail to truly become captivating.

Conclusion

Uncanny Avengers #003 is the beginning of a new story arc that revolves around Apocalypse’s return, while Red Skull still lingers in the background. While the Avengers would rather occupy themselves getting the mutants out of the spotlight, capture Red Skull and work on their image, it seems they will have to fight for the fate of the world first, even if the general populace doesn’t think highly of them.
