Guardians of the Galaxy #003 – Comic Book Review
Peter Quill and his ragtag group of Guardians of the Galaxy have been in their fair share of pickles as of late, after being locked up by his own father and having to protect the Earth from impending doom once again. While this all ended relatively well, Peter Quill now finds himself in the realm of the ‘dead’, talking to Thanos to learn more about what is going on. While the rest of his friends and the newly recruited Tony Stark thought their beloved Star-Lord and Drax had lost their lives, they have no more time to grieve as they already find themselves tangled up in combat with a very powerful being.
Gamora is trying the best she can to fight off a weird looking woman that is dressed in a seemingly antique armor. The origin of this fighter is unknown, just like her motives, but the remaining Guardians of the Galaxy are giving it all they’ve got in order to vanquish this fearsome fighter. Luckily Peter and Drax reappear after they vanished quite some time ago, presuming them dead by their friends. They are the much needed backup in order to tilt the battle in the favor of Earth’s defenders.
While everyone is stoked to see Peter and Drax again, it also raises certain questions as to how they were able to flee from Thanos, without striking a deal with the villain and of course who the mysterious fighter is and why she has appeared in front of the heroic party.
The pace of this third bundle from the Standaard Uitgeverij is a bit slower than the previous ones, as it’s more about sketching the fact that our blue planet is in danger, as well as adding some background information about the warrior that Gamora, Tony Stark, Rocket and Groot have a hard time beating. While not that much happens over the course of the three issues in this omnibus, the stage is clearly being set for a bigger battle that will situate itself around the Earth. Brian Michael Bendis takes things slowly this time, but the new character and the appearance of the Watcher (an entity that watches all events in the universe, but almost never interferes), makes things interesting enough.
Overall the illustrations of this bundle are very detailed and topnotch quality but the style drastically changes in the third issue that is found in this compilation. The third issue (#008) is presented in a more abstract manner with very weird red and blue color tones, making it seem like a paper version of the anime feature film ‘Dead Leaves’. Nonetheless, even though this style might not be your first thought of combining it with Guardians of the Galaxy, it still fits quite nicely with the story and the franchise.
Conclusion
Guardians of the Galaxy #003 feels a bit like the story was purposely slowed down in order to paint the proper picture. While things may still not be crystal clear by the end of the bundle, a few key action scenes will surely provide enough entertainment. We’re quite curious to see how the intergalactic defenders will save Earth once more.
