Even though Minecraft attracts both young and old, the game has a lot more going on than meets the eye. While the basic functions of the game become rather clear by spending some time mining, digging and crafting, there is a lot more to learn if you wish to build yourself a great universe for you, and perhaps others to enjoy. A while ago we discussed the first part of the ‘Hacks for Minecrafters’ series, which handled all the basics, but if you’re starting to become a veteran by now, you might want to take a look at this second guide which handles the topic of ‘Command Blocks’. Toss your shovels and your mining picks aside, this one will be all about programming and fun projects that go hand in hand with it. Be warned, you probably still have much to learn.

Command Blocks

Note: As our site is based in Belgium, we were given the Dutch version of the book. This means that the writing style might differ a tad at times from the original style. The book is also available in English and probably certain other languages as well.

This book is quite hard to properly describe compared to the one we reviewed last time, as this one is all about commands and command blocks. Simply put, this issue will teach you the basics of programming in Minecraft, allowing you to create nifty special features for your own server, or commands that apply to every server. After getting a small introduction about what commands are, you’ll get a step-by-step tutorial on how to set up your own test server, in which you can mess around, not having to worry about accident, allowing you to eventually create your own server for the general populace or simply your friends when you’ve mastered the basics, or at least the items you wish to implement in your future cube filled paradise.

Not only does the album cover the basics, it also teaches you to mess around, creating either super minions, nifty tools, commands that activate at certain intervals, all with the proper explanation, examples and Megan Miller, the author, also mentions a link where you can download a document in which most commands are already typed, making sure you won’t make any mistakes when trying them out yourself (keep in mind, you might have to alter certain things to match your server).

Everything in the book is not only documented properly with written explanations, but also by the use of screenshots, examples and even tables that have many commands and suggestions in them. If you truly wish to test everything that’s in this issue, you’ll have your work cut out for you.

Conclusion

Hacks for Minecrafters: Command Blocks: The unofficial guide to tips and tricks other guides won’t teach you is a great asset for those who wish to have some proper programming instructions for Minecraft at the ready. While most of this content can be found online, it’s easy to have it all in one place, without you having to minimize your game client constantly when trying out new things. A fun asset for those who wish to get more out of their Minecraft experience.
