Uncanny Avengers #004 – Comic Book Review
If the Red Skull wasn’t already overpowered enough after stealing Xavier’s brain from his cold dead body, a new threat appeared on the horizon. After the passing of the previous Apocalypse, Archangel’s children stepped up to the plate in order to become the Apocalypse twin. While it seems the world is right at the brink of destruction, it appears Uriel and Eimin Worthington have a totally different agenda, that might involve a lot less bloodshed than one would imagine. They might be scattered at the moment, the Avengers will surely assemble once again, at least if they wish to overcome the dangers that lurk in front of them.
The Avengers are still doubting whether they can get the world to see things the same way as they, namely a world where normal humans can coexist with mutants. While these emotions are slowly weighing down the group, they still have to soldier on, especially with the Apocalypse twin currently threatening the world. The group splits up to take a look at different leads, but soon after many of the members of the superhero troupe find themselves battling some of their old foes, who were supposed to be dead. Well, in reality they are still dead but have been reanimated by the powers of the new Apocalypse. While the rest is battling demons from their past, Uriel and Eimin set their sights on both Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, as she might hold the key to lead the mutants to a new peaceful era, albeit on another planet. To accomplish this peaceful goal she’ll have to trust those who are currently bearing the title of Apocalypse and she’ll also need Simon Williams, who could grant her enough power to succeed.
Compared to the previous omnibuses the flow of this one is very fast and a tad chaotic, as you’ll jump from one ongoing battle to another, while getting snippets of information for both the main story, as well as the characters that are in the fights. All of this makes it a bit confusing at times, especially when some characters start talking about events that have transpired in other series and in some cases they even talk about things that are going on in the other series currently being bundled by the Standaard Uitgeverij. This means that the way they are publishing different storylines is in a rather scrambled way, which in most cases will not provide a problem, except for a mention of an event hither and thither. Rick Remender presents us with an action packed storyline for these three issues bundled together, and we even get a glimpse of Uriel and Eimin’s past.
This bundle consists out of two different illustrations styles, namely a very rugged and sketchy one at the beginning, and one that’s a lot tighter towards the end. Both suit the story perfectly, and both are accompanied by fitting colors, which also have a flow from dark to more cheerful and brighter colors. Overall everything stays quite detailed.
Conclusion
Uncanny Avengers #004 presents the ragtag team of mutants and superheroes with a new problematic situation, all while the Red Skull is still on the loose. You’ll be treated to a gargantuan dose of battles, all while the fate of the world is at stake, or at least that of the mutant world and those who are seeking harmony between mutants and regular human beings. The battle is only just beginning.
