Steven is still processing the loss of his ‘son’ Ian and the love of his life, Carter. While he is finally back ‘home’, Dimension Z is the place that was his home for nearly a decade, even though mere moments have passed on Earth. Steven pretty much severed his ties with the past and has become a different person altogether and he has taken Zola’s daughter Jet under his wing. Sadly, the latter will not be featured that prominently in this story, it’s more about the downfall of S.H.I.E.L.D. and how Captain America might be able to save the day, once again.

Captain America #005 Banner

Steven is still shattered with the loss of probably the two most important people in his life mere days ago, but it seems that the world is still in need of a hero of his caliber. Nuke, another supersoldier is burning foreign cities to the ground, with the American flag plastered on his face, which would cause riots and potential new wars, if it wasn’t for S.H.I.E.L.D. blocking all media coverage. Captain America takes up the task of disposing of this threat, hopefully in a peaceful manner, as Steven knows what the life of a manipulated soldier can become. Nonetheless, a conflict between genetically enhanced humans breaks loose, but Steven is not quite himself when he loses himself in a fit of rage.

When coverage is leaked and one of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s ex-agents turns against the secret organization, it becomes clear that someone is trying to take down the agency for reasons unknown. Ran Shen has a personal vendetta against the secret service but we don’t know precisely why, just yet.

Unlike the previous arc, this one starts off rather slowly and with a depressing undertone, creating a stark contrast with the previous storyline. Nonetheless, Rick Remender does an effort to draw you in by creating the subplot of a villainous presence trying to take S.H.I.E.L.D. down by tactical-behind-the-scenes warfare, rather than attacking directly. Creating discord is seemingly a more effective way to bring down a super secret organization.

The very gritty illustrations now make way for the more sleek and detailed drawings that could be seen in the second part of the previous bundle. While this omnibus also has different artists working on the story, the overall styles remain in sync with one another, albeit the second portion of this bundle is less detailed than the first part. Other than the not-so-subtle skin color change of Nick Fury, things are what you’d come to expect of the Captain America series.

Conclusion

Captain America #005 introduces the new arc at a leisurely pace but doesn’t drop that much information just yet on what to expect in the coming issues. Perhaps it’s a good choice to let the readers share Steven’s grief for a short while, before deploying an interesting character like Jet, but to see if that’s the case, we’ll have to wait for the sixth issue.
