Captain America #006 – Comic Book Review
S.H.I.E.L.D. was taking heavy hits, while Captain America was in the midst of a battle that would both save the day, as well as his reputation. It seems that a very powerful organization is slowly shaking the foundations of S.H.I.E.L.D. and it doesn’t really help with the trauma Steven is still processing, as he is clearly a changed man after spending over a decade in dimension Z. Once again we see the first Avenger struggle with what life is throwing at him, all while Jet is still adjusting to her new living situation.
Even though last time things were getting feisty, this bundle starts off with a chapter dedicated to Jet, Arnim Zola’s daughter who was supposed to kill humans, rather than live in peace with them. While she has grown accustomed to the sentiment called ‘friendship’, she finds that all the humans scurrying around the city are not that much more than weaklings, who constantly show false emotions. Even with those feelings in place she interferes when some thugs are beating up a helpless old man, which unlocks events that make her doubt her choice of coming to Earth to defend it, rather than obliterate all who walk the surface.
On Steven’s side of the story, he finds himself tracking down Fury, who is currently facing Dr. Mindbubble, who pretty much does as his name states: put your mind in a ‘bubble’ allowing him to make you see whatever he desires. Due to this, it seems S.H.I.E.L.D., or at least a portion of it, is under the villain’s control. To make matters even worse, Steven learns that his own allies actually built a device to stop the valiant Captain America if needed. Knowing they had a plan to dispose of him if they feared he would ever step out of line, Steven also starts doubting the motives of his superiors.
Overall the flow of this album isn’t all that rapid, but there’s enough action to keep things interesting. The chapter revolving around Jet is a fun intermezzo, especially given the fact that she hasn’t been receiving the attention she deserves. As a newcomer to this planet, or dimension, her persona still needs to develop a lot and we were quite happy to finally see some movement in the matter. After that, it’s all about S.H.I.E.L.D.’s new enemies and the undermining of the agency. Overall Rick Remender keeps things interesting, but we hope to see a bit more of Jet in the near future.
This bundle has two very different drawing styles, where the first one is very rough and puts down rather rudimentary illustrations, while the other is smoother, more comical and has more colorful tones accompanying the drawings. Overall every character still has their distinct features, but it takes some time to adjust to these new drawing styles.
Conclusion
Captain America #006 takes it a bit slower than usually, to let the situation sink in properly. Nonetheless, as mentioned above, we would like to see more story content surrounding Jet, as it’s clear she is still adapting to her new life. That being said, this sixth bundle still keeps up its qualitative storyline and we can’t wait to see what happens to S.H.I.E.L.D. next, and what secrets still lie uncovered.
