Wolverine #009 – Comic Book Review
The mysterious orb that is in Sabretooth’s possession is a device that can reshape the world into something cruel, if Sabretooth desires it so. The orb itself has called upon many doppelgangers from alternate realities to fend off the good guys on the other side of the fence, allowing the criminal mastermind to continue his plan, or at least take the final step in creating his own perfect world. Logan however is there to put a stop to him, and for once he is relying on his allies and friends to lend him a helping hand.
Truth be told, we can’t tell you much more than that there’s going to be a standoff between Wolverine and Sabretooth, as this story arc ends at the beginning of this omnibus, thus only the final showdown remains. It’ll be a rather deep voyage for Wolverine, as he’ll have to come to terms with his newfound mortality and the loss of his powers, and how he’ll have to lead his life from now on.
Other than the end of the orb story arc, there are three shorter stories in this album, one revolving around what could have happened if Wolverine allowed the virus to go its way and decided to keep his powers, rather than to put a stop to the horrible things to come. Another story revolves around a bar that houses superheroes, and the last story is about Wolverine, Jubilee and Shogo going on a camping trip, as Logan wants to teach Jubilee how to live on her own, off the land if the situation desires it.
All of these separate stories provide a nice change of pace from the otherwise very heavy storylines that the Wolverine series has had so far. Nonetheless, as this is the second-to-last issue of the series, it somehow feels as if the series will now have to rush an ending to wrap most things up.
Illustrations differ per story, each having their unique style, where one is a bit more lighthearted and comical, with the last one being slightly more abstract, darker and less detailed. Overall every story has a fitting art style that suits the plot at hand.
Conclusion
Wolverine #009 is a great continuation of the series, but also a great breather from the otherwise lengthy storylines. We loved the short stories and the message they all brought with them, mostly revolving around what could have been, or emphasizing the loss of Logan’s powers and how he will have to live his life from now on.
