KontrolFreek Turbo for Switch – Accessory Review
We have to face the music and admit that the Switch’s Joy-Con controllers aren’t the most comfortable controllers, and the placement of the sticks isn’t always perfect for some games either, and the sticks are a bit on the small side and make it easy to slip off. KontrolFreek has already presented us with many different thumbsticks to add extra grip, all while trying to look a bit on the fancy side, albeit with the practical and functional side on the first place. We were quite curious to see how this brand could upgrade the gaming experience with the Switch’s Joy-Con controllers.
When looking at the design of the Turbo, KontrolFreek aimed for a somewhat simple design, reminding us a bit of liquorice, albeit with a few different swirls when putting the two side by side. Nonetheless, the design is rather fun, especially when you buy the package that has the blue and red thumbstick, seeing the all-black package looks a lot more classy instead of playful.
The gridded and dented design made sure that the Turbo offers a lot more grip than the base sticks of the Joy-Con controller, which is immediately a plus, as the Switch’s controllers don’t offer that much grip, especially if you tend to sweat a lot during longer gaming sessions, or simply during critical moments. You’ll get used to these sticks in a matter of minutes, easily forgetting what the device originally felt like.
Installing the sticks was quite easy, and it didn’t really matter which one went where. We did notice however that you have to apply some pressure to properly align them, as they go on a bit crooked if you don’t apply the proper pressure. We also like to mention that these sticks are not compatible with a pro controller, as the pro controller’s base sticks are thicker than the Joy-Con’s.
The sticks are pretty much meant for an all-round purpose, which means that the sticks should be useful no matter what game(s) you decide to play. You’ll find that the overall comfort and extra grip will aid you in either saving yet another princess, aiming your next shell-shot, or simply during your next platforming session.
Conclusion
Overall this package felt logical and qualitative from the start. The two low-rise thumbsticks felt perfect for the Joy-Con controllers, adding a lot more grip, enlarging the sticks themselves and simply enhancing your gaming experience. While the sticks themselves might have the design of liquorice, they fit the design of Nintendo’s console perfectly. If you’re already spending a lot of money on your Joy-Con controllers, a few extra dollars on extra comfort are no excessive luxury.
