All New X-Men #005 – Comic Book Review
The X-Men that travelled from the past to our present time already had enough issues dealing with how they would turn out in the future, as some ended up distancing themselves from their original beliefs, while others simply wound up dead. While these things will still take a lot longer to process, a new problem already presented itself, seeing Mystique, Sabretooth and Lady Mastermind are responsible for a chain of robberies, all while Lady Mastermind makes it seems as if it’s the fault of the original X-Men, all thanks to her powers. She can send out illusions, to make people see what she wants them to see. Nonetheless, the X-Men and The Avengers are slowly popping this illustrious bubble.
Jean is slowly starting to control her powers, which is actually a lot faster than she initially did, which grants the rest of the X-Men a bit of hope things might go a bit smoother this time around. Nonetheless, the original X-Men, safe for Warren, together with Wolverine and Kitty have tracked down Sabretooth, Mystique and Lady Mastermind, and while Wolverine and Kitty stated they would handle things, it was to be expected that the youngsters also dived into the fray. Mystique was in the process of striking a deal with Madame Hydra, to get their own private island, to be left alone or start up their own private ‘business’.
While the first two issues bundled in this omnibus revolve around Mystique and her evil plans, the last issue handled a more romantic topic. With a title as Jean Grey and the Beast, it’s clear that it will suggest a romantic plot involving both characters. Even though we won’t spoil that much about this not-so-subtle suggestion, a fun side-plot also occurs when the younger versions of Scott and Bobby sneak out to live a normal teenager life and perhaps impress some girls in the process.
Overall the flow is quite rapid in this omnibus, but of course there are sufficient cliffhangers and information to revisit this key events at a later time during the upcoming issues. Nonetheless, Brian Michael Bendis keeps things interesting and the last issue about the romantic plot does serve as a bit of a coolant from the otherwise action packed issues.
This bundle again consists out of three issues (#13-15) and the first two are in sync with the illustrations of the previous omnibuses, where a realistic approach was handled. Everything looks smooth and crisp, making sure the battles can be fully appreciated. Things get completely shaken up when during issue #15 everything gets a more comical form and the colors become a lot brighter. This is perfectly in tune with the rather lighthearted plot that is started in this part of the omnibus.
Conclusion
All New X-Men #005 feels as qualitative as the previous issues and perhaps even brings a bit of adorable events to a series which has been quite heavy up until now. Nonetheless, there is still enough fighting going on, and the problems of the younger students still haven’t been washed away.
