Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey – The Fate of Atlantis: Episode 1 – Fields of Elysium DLC – Review
When we think of the last few installments of the Assassin’s Creed series, we are used to getting a lot of decent DLC content. They bring a lot of added value to the game and give us an extra purpose to complete a lot of the main storylines in order to keep pressing on. Most of them sound familiar to a lot of people, like the Jack The Ripper DLC and many more. And of course, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey also provides us with a few DLCs. The first one was the Legacy of the First Blade DLC and brought us one of the lesser ones in terms of storyline. But don’t fear, The Fate of Atlantis DLC has a lot more for us in store.
Playing Assassin’s Creed’s DLC, The Fate of Atlantis, has a few requirements. First of all, you need to reach level 28 or above to even start out and after that you need to complete two questlines which are the following: Between two worlds and Heir of Memories. Upon reaching these requirements you can play The Fate of Atlantis which has three episodes with the first one being Fields of Elysium. Two more episodes are planned after that, namely Torment of Hades and the Judgement of Atlantis, which will be available in mid-2019.
The story of Fields of Elysium starts out with you talking to Aletheia, she tells you that you are the Keeper who protects the Great Seal. The Great seal hid in Atlantis from Pythagoras and you need to pledge to keep the staff safe until the Heir of Memories is ready to take it. This results in getting the quest ‘The Isu Beckon’. You can start it by travelling to the gates of Atlantis on the Island Thera.
You also travel back to the present and inspect a starlit ruin as Layla Hassan. This ruin harbors the Great Seal of Atlantis. Here she will hear a voice calling her, this voice resonates from the scepter near her. At that time, the people who are communicating with Layla get interference on their communication devices and lose all contact with her. After her conversation with the staff, you are ‘teleported’ back to your mercenary character in ancient Greece which can be Alexios or Kassandra. This is the moment where your journey to the Fields of Elysium really kicks off. Now you need to find Theras who has answers that can lead you to the missing pieces that are necessary to find Atlantis.
Theras had discovered the whereabouts of the symbols and had a rough map of their approximate location. He wanted to gift this map to his friend Phidias, but before he could receive it, he was brutally murdered. The reason for his death also had to do with knowing something more about these symbols. The map was of great value for a lot of people and was a dangerous thing to possess. But with the help of Aletheia, Kassandra/Alexios sought the three symbols in their next quest. They knew that these symbols were the key to unlocking the Great Seal of Atlantis.
The three symbols were hidden for a long time and can be found by the Heir of Memories in the present. But before Layla can find them there, she needs to get into the Animus and find the three tombs in ancient Greece as Kassandra/Alexios. After every tomb she finds, you are teleported back to her body in the present, which is located in the tomb she just visited in the Animus. She needs to search the tomb for the hidden symbol in each of them as she is the Heir of Memories after all.
So when Layla discovers all the symbols she needs to do something that will be engraved in her memory for eternity. She needs to find the names throughout the memory of Deimos by using the Animus. When you remember the talk you had with Theras, you know that his friend Phidias has been gravely tortured and killed, for knowing something more about the symbols… His torturer was Deimos. This will result in seeing Deimos attack Phidias for the answers, which for Deimos meant almost nothing at that time, but for Layla, the last words of Phidias are the missing pieces she needed.
After connecting all the dots, Layla opens the gate to Atlantis and there the story of Kassandra/Alexios continues. Back in Ancient Greece, you discover that you need to enter the underworld to reach Atlantis. At the gates, you uncovered that Atlantis is a part of the underworld, created by Persophone as her paradise. This, in turn, was a gift to Persophone from her husband Hades.
When you enter Atlantis, you are attacked by the soldiers of Persophone. After their defeat, you are face to face with Hermes. Hermes tells you that here you can learn more about the staff and how to stop it from taking you to its dark side.
The Fate of Atlantis takes you to a beautiful place, which is different from the scenery that you are used to in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. You see the starlit ruins with Layla and enter Atlantis with your mercenary. Atlantis is surrounded by huge waterfalls, open fields (which are rare in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey), pillars which take you to a lot of destinations and a few beautiful cities which are floating around in the air.
This DLC covers a mechanic which is used a lot in the main game. You need to fight the army of Persophone, as you did with the Spartans or Athens. The fighting mechanics and music don’t deviate far from what we’ve seen in the main game.
Conclusion
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey – The Fate of Atlantis: Episode 1 – Fields of Elysium DLC is a nice addition to the game. You go further into the storyline and get a lot of new content that is actually relevant to the story. The DLC provides you with a lot of beautiful scenery and a new goal you can chase by progressing in it. You also see a comeback of a few mechanics that we loved in the main game. So overall this is one of the more beautiful DLCs of the year which is certainly worth to check out.
