Audio-Technica ATH-TWX7 – Hardware Review
It’s only been a few weeks since we took a closer look at Audio-Technica’s ATH-CKS30TW+ wireless earbuds. These mid-range wireless earbuds proved to be great, even though the stickless design did take some time to get used to. Even so, you were getting your money’s worth, and we even ranked them among more premium devices. Today, however, we take a look at Audio-Technica’s more premium-priced wireless earbuds, namely the ATH-TWX7. These classy-looking earbuds promise a superb experience, and we were ready to put them to the test.
Design
Design-wise, the ATH-TWX7 looks classy and like a proper premium package. The earbuds have a traditional stick design with matte black finishing touches. There is a subtle Audio-Technica logo on each earpiece, and you’ll also notice a button on each of the sticks. The latter stands out as not that many other similar products still have physical buttons.
The case has a somewhat unconventional design because of its slanted design. This makes one of the sides a lot thinner but it ends up looking very classy as well. There is also an Audio-Technica logo on the lid, which matches the design of the earbuds. The black soft matte coating looks quite good, especially in combination with the gray sides. Last but not least, there is a subtle LED light on the front of the case. As a whole, apart from the slanted case, Audio-Technica played is fairly safe with a modest and clean design for the ATH-TWX7. This way, the earbuds match every type of outfit, be it for work purposes, going to the gym, or even a small getaway.
Comfort
In terms of comfort, the ATH-TWX7 does not disappoint. It comes with different-sized ear adapters, ensuring you will find the one that suits you the best. The stick design of the earpieces makes it easy to adjust so that the earbuds rest comfortably in your auricles. We didn’t feel any discomfort during one of our workout sessions or when we were enthralled during one of our binge sessions.
The case weighs only 47,5g, making it easy to carry around. Both earbuds add 4,7g per earbud. The case size is also quite small, so you can easily store it in your pocket. We noticed fingerprints were a bit more visible on the case due to the soft matte material.
Overview
The ATH-TWX7 pairs easily with your device of choice, and when paired with your smartphone, the phone will prompt you to install the dedicated app. As stated in our review of the ATH-CKS30TW+ wireless headphones, you can adjust different settings to suit your personal preference. You’ll have the equalizer at your disposal, as well as the ANC functions, volume options, and so on. The app is quite easy to use, and it’s easy to find the settings that elevate your listening experience. We could swap settings on the fly to have the bass pop more to the foreground when watching an action flick, but we could also make the voices more audible when listening to our favorite singers. As also mentioned in the review of the ATH-CKS30TW+, the ATH-TWX7 also has individual connection sounds playing per earbud, and your media does not get paused when you put one earbud back in the case. The earbuds use a mix of touch controls and the aforementioned button controls. Thanks to these two options, the ATH-TWX7 becomes more versatile.
Right off the bat, we noticed that the sound quality of these earbuds is amazing. You’ll have crisp and crystal clear audio feedback, and with the aforementioned app, you can customize the different settings in order to get an even better experience. The earbuds are suitable for all types of audio experiences, such as listening to calm and relaxing music, but also more explosive tunes when you are, for example, working out. We even enjoyed quite a bit of gaming with these earbuds as well, and the bass provides nice feedback for more action-packed titles. The built-in microphones also pick up sound well, making the ATH-TWX7 earphones very versatile. We could easily make work calls and private calls, even when we were out and about. Those on the receiving end also received clear audio feedback.
All in all, the battery life of twenty hours is quite decent. The earbuds hold a charge of seven and a half hours, and a fully charged case holds an additional thirteen and a half hours of battery life. This is pretty much the exact same battery life as the lower-priced ATH-CKS30TW+. Keep in mind that some actions deplete the battery quicker, such as using the ANC options. Even so, a total of twenty hours of playback time is still quite good, and we could listen to our favorite tunes in peace. Longer commutes were also no issue, and we could last quite a few days before having to charge the ATH-TWX7. Charging the case is done via USB-C, and a cable is included with the device.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for premium-quality wireless earbuds, the ATH-TWX7 has you covered on all fronts. You’ll be treated to a comfortable experience with crystal-clear audio feedback, proper bass for those heavier tunes, and decent battery life to ensure you can go on a few binge sessions if you so desire. While the price may be a bit higher than the ATH-CKS30TW+, you’re very much getting a good bang for your buck here.
