Journey through a serene world with your unique character in Might and Delight’s Book of Travels where you can explore, gather supplies, craft, and meet all kinds of new people, whether it’s an NPC or another player. You can fully make up your own adventure in this MMORPG that has now been in Early Access on Steam for over a month. The reception of it was positive overall but the game still has some notable flaws. Let us walk it through.

Since Book of Travels is very keen on roleplaying, the story is mainly created by you. You start the game off by creating your own character that exists out of different attributes, traits, and skills. You get a few options you can choose from but there’s not much room for personalization. Although, we are given a chance to type our own gender, background story, and additional traits, all of which don’t actually impact the character in-game. This is more so for your own playstyle and roleplay conception. The rest of the attributes, such as personality, equipment, and names are randomized. You can, however, randomize it yourself and even how many times as you want. You just have to be sure of this, because it can’t be edited later on and the name will be stuck with you until the character’s permadeath. So if you’re anything like us, and have a vague idea of what you want your character to be, you’ll be randomizing for quite a while.

When you’re done with creating your character, you need to choose how your journey begins by answering a couple of questions. After that, you’re all set! You get a short cutscene for a little prologue and then you’re dropped off randomly in the world of Braided Shore and you’re ready to start roaming around. The more you travel and explore, the more you discover and build up your own story in the game.

You’re telling us that there’s a whole hand-painted world where you can just roam around and adventure in? Say no more! Even if you haven’t played the game and only seen bits and pieces of it, you must admit that the visuals are just plain stunning. Book of Travels is an artwork that is nothing but enjoyable and serene. The fact that there is 3-dimensional depth only makes it much more impressive to play in.

With enjoyable beautiful visuals, there’s also a great OST to back it up perfectly. It brings out the mystical/mythical vibe that the world gives out. The sounds of the surroundings and NPCs are also very fitting. These effects liven up the world even more.

As stated earlier, Book of Travels is heavily set on (as you might’ve guessed) ‘traveling’, but also roleplay. The game is meant for you to find your own way and place in the world of Braided Shores. There’s no hand-holding, there’s no obvious goal, there’s just you and the others. You build up your own story and that’s it. If you do find any interesting characters or places, it’s basically up to you to remember where they are. Thankfully, the controls and tutorials are clear enough to help guide you a bit through the game and battles.

As a whole, the gameplay is very easy. It’s mostly point-and-click if you prefer just that. It’s simply a game where you undergo your own journey. You can explore every nook and cranny, talk to or trade with NPCs and even meet up with other real-life players. You don’t even have to venture out on your own. This might even be safer for you, since there’s danger everywhere.

The danger isn’t that scary though. The battles are very simplistic and just have you click to attack. If you’re not up for battling, you can easily avoid your enemies, given they don’t detect you first. Then again, where’s the fun in that? Combat is currently the only action-based part of the game and offers a nice change of pace from the otherwise leisurely activities

Conclusion

Book of Travels is a beautiful Action/Adventure MMORPG that is stunning and has great potential. It’s clear to see what the developers Might and Delight are striving to create, but with barely any content, there’s no game. Book of Travels is too dependent on the player’s ability to roleplay and their imagination to fill up the game. There should still be a goal or a path set in-game to make playing it worthwhile. Otherwise, what’s the point in playing?
