Dark Souls II: Crown of the Sunken King DLC – Review
Dark Souls II is back to have you crawl through the depths in the Crown of the Sunken King DLC. You’ll be able to fight for your humanity once again or perhaps you’ll become one of the trapped souls in this forgotten realm.
Story wise the DLC offers pretty much the same as the original game. A vague storyline will light your path but you’re pretty much on your own. Enjoy the environments in which you’re thrown without any prior knowledge and go with the flow. The flow might end up being bloody instead of watery though. That being said, you’ll be treated to an impressive dragon right at the beginning, perhaps this might heat things up later?
Those who finished the game but still wish for more content can now rejoice. The Crown of the Sunken King DLC will present you with the first of the trilogy of DLC items to come. This DLC will take you to familiar grounds, when it comes to the overall gameplay but certain items might seem a bit different.
If you have leveled enough during the course of the original Dark Souls II storyline you’ll notice that the beginning of the DLC does not start off being too difficult. A lot of the enemies are easily disposed of when you get back in to your vibe but this times enemies are not the only obstacle. This is where the game feels a bit different, because of the addition of “puzzles”. In the original game there were of course some puzzles to solve, switches to find and so on. The DLC however, seems to offer more side roads than the original game as well as more things to ‘solve’. Especially at the beginning of your quest deep down in the depths you’ll get treated to more sidetracks than you’re used to. Of course, exploring is always interesting, seeing you will never know what is around the corner. That being said, in the Crown of the Sunken King it’s easy to say the developers tried to show another side of the game by adding this many puzzles.
Overall the DLC is quite long for the price it’s currently available. Nonetheless you’ll be spending most of the time completing the puzzles, which will of course drag out the experience making it worth the buy. Even though the enemies in the DLC are all quite alike, the bosses will spice up things, just like in the original game.
Conclusion
Considering the price and the overall content you’re getting, Crown of the Sunken King is not a mere DLC but more a small expansion. The quality is on par with the original game and it’s not just more of the same. Puzzles will show you another side of the game, whilst combat is as fierce as ever. The king is back, baby.
