Darksiders: Warmastered Edition (Switch) – Review
Almost a decade after its first release, the developers of Darksiders made a remastered edition, Darksiders: Warmastered Edition. The game was already available on PS4, Xbox One and PC before the Switch edition was released, but now they finally decided to also release it on this platform. Both the original game and the Warmastered Edition were well received by the public back then and now has its chance to shine on a new console. Of course, the developers had to put some effort in to make it work in both handheld and TV mode. So let’s find out if they succeeded in this task and if there are any surprises to find here.
Story
Throughout the game you will take control of War, the first Horseman of the Apocalypse. War is accused by the Charred Council for destroying the balance between heaven and hell, resulting in the destruction of mankind. War claims to be summoned since one of the seven seals is broken, but the council tells him that this isn’t the case and says that War has to be punished for his actions. Despite the events that War has caused they decide to listen to him and give him a chance to prove his innocence. But they still take his powers away and keep him under strict observation as he goes on his journey to find the ones responsible for the events and bring them to justice.
After almost a decade, the story of Darksiders is still an intriguing one. The story is brought to the player by different cutscenes throughout the game. These are fully voice-acted in a sinister tone that immediately grabs your attention. Everything is accompanied by subtitles, making it easier to follow.
Graphics
The game used 3D-graphics, in a drawn yet detailed style. The looks are similar to any other Darksiders game, yet they are polished up and look even better now. During the game you will find yourself in different areas such as the street of a demolished city or in the dungeons of the underworld.
As mentioned before, everything is very detailed and the developers managed to make everything look even more real than it was in the original version of the game. Where lag usually is an obstacle for games like this, you are most likely not to encounter this while playing, and so the game keeps delivering graphically in both handheld mode and TV mode.
Sound
Where the original game was praised for its fantastic music, sound effects and voice-acting, there was still the question concerning whether they could bring this to the Nintendo Switch. Well, the answer is yes! From the first moment you start playing you will quickly learn that the sound and voice-acting play an important role in the game. Like mentioned before, when you first launch the game it immediately grabs your attention through a sinister voice telling the story, and this is continued throughout the whole game. This is combined by a dark tone which you will hear constantly while playing. Also, the other sound effects such hitting a demon with your weapon are all there, which really gives a complete feeling to it.
Gameplay
Darksiders: Warmastered Edition is a hack ‘n slash action adventure game in which it is your goal to find out who is responsible for the apocalypse in order to get War’s powers back. The game is a remastered version of the original game that was released back in 2010.
During the game, you will have to fight your way through a lot of demons, bosses and other beings that will try and get in your way. While most of the time you will be fighting with War’s own sword, the Chaoseater, you will still be able to unlock different weapons throughout the game.
Combat wise, the game is balanced out and it doesn’t feel like battling is getting repetitive. As mentioned above, during the game you will unlock different weaponsB, each bringing unique combos to you. Also, the controls that you use to battle in order to attack and do combos are nicely explained and easy to make your own if you put some effort in them.
While playing this game, you will have the opportunity to upgrade your abilities by using souls. Some of them are gained through battling, others are a bit harder to obtain. In order to find them, you have to start scavenging the different areas and really pay attention. This adds some extra challenge to the gameplay. These upgraded abilities can give nice features like, for example, heal you.
When you start playing the game, you will have the opportunity to choose a difficulty level (easy, normal or apocalyptic). When it’s your first time playing the game and you aren’t familiar with the controls, you will experience a hard time playing even the easy mode. Normally it will take you around 15 to 20 hours to complete the main game.
Conclusion
Bringing Darksiders in its Warmastered form to the Nintendo Switch was a great decision of both the publisher and developers. While looking at both the sound and graphical aspect of the game, it just keeps delivering in both handheld and TV mode. After so many years the story keeps getting to you and makes you want to play the game more and more. It is safe to say that Darksiders: Warmastered Editions is a beautiful game that you want to have in your Switch library.
