With Johan and Allis finally escaping from the Hellmouth, leaving Malfrat stranded, things seem to be looking up for the duo that is travelling to Merlin, who has big things in store for Allis. Sadly, Johan still doesn’t know why Allis is so important, but he will not waver from the task that has been laid out for him, and he will make sure the young lively lady will arrive in one piece, not only because he is clearly getting slightly fond of the fiery redhead, but also because he is a sworn knight of the round table, and he will not allow an innocent person to die under his watch. At least, not again.

With Malfrat trapped on the island, both the red knight’s and Allis’ journey has slowed down a bit, and after a run in with a mugger in Véras, the duo decides to stay a bit, to rest up, and see what the ‘trial by fire’ is all about. Apparently it’s a game of ‘chicken’ of who wants to jump through a raging bonfire, which only gets more intense the longer the participants wait. The one who dares to jump through it the last, will go home with a lot of cash. Nonetheless, something is fishy about the ordeal.

Marc Legendre puts the main story on hold to create this intermezzo, which is a very fun and welcome change of pace, which allows you to relax together with the characters. Nonetheless, the main tale still evolves slightly in this issue, thus you will not be left out in the cold.

Fabio Bono is clearly not shy of trying out different settings, and it shows. In this issue we trade off the tropical island setting for one that suits a medieval city, and he makes sure that all details are taken care of. Character wise not much has changed, safe for Johan looking a bit less scruffy, becoming more like the well-known knight from the original series.

Conclusion

De Rode Ridder #254 De Vuurproef is a fun change of pace from the otherwise very hectic beginning issues of the newly revamped series. While the main story still evolves, you’ll be able to enjoy a small breather that serves as a fun intermezzo, to show what both characters have in store, allowing you to get to know Johan and Allis a little bit better. While this issue is slightly less action packed, it’s still a great continuation of the otherwise somewhat hectic series.
