F.A.C.T.S. Spring Edition 2016
Conventions are getting more and more popular in the Benelux and the second yearly edition of FACTS is proof of this new trend. Past weekend, there was a spring edition of the event, giving people the opportunity to attend this event on another moment. Let’s take a look if a change of season has their effects on the con itself as well.
First of all, there were other security regulations due to the recent events in Brussels. The organization followed the orders of the Belgian authorities, forbidding large backpacks and conducting thorough searches before you were even able to enter the convention grounds. Due to these measurements, people exclaimed on social media that they would stay home. At any rate, it is marvelous that the organization did their best to let the event take place and to increase the security. Every small bag or plastic bag you took into the building was checked before you could attend to the waiting line. It was thought that these lines would be extensive, but it seems that the damage wasn’t that big.
There was one main hall that had all the exhibitioners, while the five smaller halls where reserved for other activities. For instance, there was one area that was dedicated for the Marvel fans, while there was another hall that held a laser shooting arena and some other activities like Guitar Hero and a bunch of arcade games. Of course, cosplayers had their special Walhalla as well, while others could meet their favorite character in a photo booth.
The cosplay area was better organized, thanks to the two screens and the available seats in front of the stage. This made it easier to follow the contest, while the early birds had a place to sit as well. Next to that, there were also more possibilities for pictures as well. The center hall had a large catwalk that could be used and there were large mats that all led to a hall, giving a fun twist.
It seems that the organization listened to the remarks and suggestions of the crowd and press and changed quite some things. For starters, there was a lot more room between the exhibitioners, making it way easier to walk around and get a breather. Of course, there were spots where it would still be crowded, but this was more an exception than a rule. Due to this increased space, there were less shops available. Even more, the goods that sold were sold didn’t seem diverse, as there where loads of Funko pops and plushies. Although it is a real positive point that there was a lot more room, it would have been nice if the sold goods were a tad more varied.
Secondly, there were a lot of extra seating spots, mostly in the corners of the main hall. This is a really good addition, as it was hard to find a place to rest and eat. The available dining possibilities were increased as well and they were spread out more across the exhibition grounds.
In this modern age, we all live with our smartphones and apps. FACTS had an app this year, giving you the possibility to check the map on your phone, get a list of the shops and get notifications when certain activities were going to start. This is a real lifesaver, especially if you don’t watch your clock all of the time.
The last point is the increase in activities. Of course, you still had the all-known cosplay competition and Nintendo stand but there was more than that. Each of the smaller halls had their own ‘theme’, where you could find stands or props that would fit in this setting. There were certain activities that could be done, like the speed dating or laser shooting. It really felt like there was so much to do and it was quite diverse so everyone could find something to their liking.
Overall, it is fun to see that the organisation is listening to feedback and tries to improve their event. With this first spring edition, I think they might have hit the right buttons to tackle a bigger target group and let everyone leave satisfied.

It was a nice start of the convention season but there were so few decent shops it was a slight meh.
