First impressions of Darkblade
At Gamescom 2014 you could play the beta version of NetEase newest title Darkblade – which was also nominated for the Gamescom 2014 Awards in the section of Mobile Games. A title that Darkblade may as well deserve.
Darkblade is a 2D side-scrolling martial-styled fighter that at first glance reminded me of the classic Mortal Combat games. While its graphic style cannot be compared to the Mortal Combat franchise, the Chinese martial combat system surely feels familiar. The game combines Unity with traditional animation and this seems to be fairly present in its graphical features as well. The colors are basic cyan and gray with splashes of red that is the also the main color of the game in general. The gameplay itself is fairly simple. The left bottom is your way of moving your character around while various skills can be found on the right side. For a mobile game, played on the iPad, I found that the action buttons were quite responsive which is certainly a must in a fighting game. The variation of enemies are certainly a nice feature, each with their own abilities. As there is not much known about the storyline of Darkblade, I cannot say much about it but I can say that there is enough background story for you to be pulled in.
An English version of the game is being looked into but for now the beta of Darkblade is only available in the Chinese language.
