What do you get when you cross vipers with vampires? Culebras, that’s what and these are the creatures of the night in From Dusk Till Dawn. Robert Rodriguez, creator of Frank Miller’s Sin City and the movie From Dusk Till Dawn is also the creator of the series. Settle in for a gore splattering, action packed train ride straight to hell.

The story of From Dusk Till Dawn: Season 2 starts of where the first one left off. The Nine Lords, Culebra overlords, are after the infamous dancer ‘Santanico’, who lured men into the Titty Twister. Those men would never leave, because the Titty Twister is where the lost souls are reaped. The Culebras don’t just drink blood, but also the souls. So with Santanico (Eiza González) gone, the Titty Twister is nothing more than the average bar and not a Culebra feeding ground in full swing.

Malvado (Esai Morales), the owner of the feeding ground and one of the Nine Lords, is throwing everything he has in returning Santanico to his possession. She in turn wants to return to him, but not to become a dancer again, but to end his life. She no longer wants to be a slave. Santanico has teamed up with one of the Gecko brothers, Richie Gecko (Zane Holtz). For the biggest part of the season, they are trying to get to Malvado for Santanico’s revenge.

The Gecko Brothers were seperated by the end season one and Seth (D. J. Cotrona) is on het south side of the border scrounging whatever cash he can find by robbing places and trying to make it big that way. Kate Fuller (Madison Davenport) has tagged along. Kate’s father, Jacob Fuller (Robert Patrick) and brother, Scott Fuller (Brandon Soo Hoo), turned into Culebras in the first season, and though she killed of her father, she was unable to kill her own brother.

Every episode in season two starts off with a short narration by Santanico. You don’t really need to have seen the first season, to be able to follow what’s going on. The narration is a different, more fluent way of: ‘Previously on’… and it works quite well. A small annoyance is that the narration happens every single episode. Even if you don’t binge watch the series, the intro and the story isn’t overly difficult, so it shouldn’t be repeated every episode.

There are some actors whose acting carreers are far from the horror or action series. One of the main antagonists is Fez from ‘That 70’s Show’. It’s difficult to take the guy seriously when his face is the constant reminder of his role in that show. Scott Fuller on the other hand, isn’t really cut out to be in the series either ,if it weren’t that the writing for his character is just right. He’s comically evil and because of this he really looks like an underdog, giving you the feeling that he might become a bigger threat. After all the easiest way to stab someone in the back is to act like you aren’t a threat.

When it comes down to the storyline of the season, it really does pan out quite nicely. The 10 episodes are used quite well, nothing is superfluent. If you watch the series because you loved the movie, then you might be a little dissappointed. It’s not that the whole season isn’t like it, there are some really great moments, that are similar to the movies. The gore is over the top, when it happens, and violence is commonplace.

From_Dusk_Til_Dawn_01The acting and writing don’t really mesh at times. The acting can be really well, but at times the writing throws the whole thing off. At other times the acting throws off the writing and the constant flux of bad acting of good lines and great acting with bad lines is a little disheartening. One of these moments is later on in the season, something unexpected happens and the reaction of certain people aren’t that normal. Another thing is that one of the characters has a very ‘deus ex machina’ way of showing up. It happens only three or four times and so it doesn’t become predictable but when you think about it, he’s either really lucky, arriving where he arrives at the time he arrives or you better not think about the fact too much. It might spoil your enjoyment of the season. One thing you can be grateful off is that the ‘Peacekeeper’ has a family, but the director has luckily decided upon not making it into a hero story where the whole thing is dragged out.

The season has a reasonable good ending yet it clearly shows that there might be a third season. Of course the ten episodes aren’t the only thing you’ll be getting when you buy the dvd box, on the three discs are also a myriad of extras. Robert Rodriguez, the cast and crew all talk about ‘From Dusk Till Dawn: Season 2, there’s an overview, featurettes, Effects and stunts, Blowing up the Titty Twister,… The amount of extras is astounding really.

Conclusion

If you are looking for something in the vein of the movies you’ll find that this season has moments of it in there. If you’ve enjoyed the first season, you’ll certainly enjoy this one. If you’ve been put off by it and don’t really feel like the series does honour to the movies, then you best let this pass you by.

First game ever was Crash Bandicoot 3 Warped, ever since then, gaming has been something that I've gravitated to. Reading's fun but not as interactive. Always up for a bout of online multiplayer. If that multiplayer is co-op. So if you are up for a friendly co-op session, hit me up. Rahenik's the name to search on PSN.
