Frostpunk might have been one of the best, if not, the best doomsday simulation games of 2018, and for the last years for that matter. The game was originally a PC only game, but it has been ported to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2019, again scoring quite well on our site. There is still ongoing support for the game in the form of DLC content, which brings us to the latest scenario pack, The Last Autumn. This DLC presents us with a prologue of what has happened with the world and shows us a green environment, rather than the white blanket of snow we saw in all the other scenarios.

We are once again thrown in the Frostpunk world, albeit slightly before the world was completely covered in snow. We see an expedition to a new land, where the big generator that powers the city in the later scenarios still has to be built. You are once again in charge of the city, the laws that get passed and sometimes even have to choose drastic actions to keep everyone in tow. The story value isn’t too big, but the overall premise of this prequel is interesting.

Even though the scenario will take several hours to tackle, even on the easiest settings, you’ll be treated to a typical Frostpunk experience, despite heat not being such a big issue here. You can start building your city around the hole where the generator will have to be built. Once again you’ll have to gather resources, pass laws, keep your inhabitants happy and tackle different goals in order to progress. Fail to do these, and you’ll see yourself fired before you know it.

As stated above, the world isn’t covered in permafrost yet, so on certain aspects, things will be a bit different. Houses don’t require a heat source, making it a bit easier at the beginning. In this scenario, you’ll have to build docks in order to keep getting supplies, as they are limited in the small area in which you are settling. These docks will become quite important when it comes to your materials and having a decent start. The mechanics remain the same, but the laws and options are somewhat different. Everything still works quite smoothly, and in many areas, the game remains tough as nails to actually complete this scenario the first time around.

Conclusion

Frostpunk: The Last Autumn is a great expansion for the base game, and it’s a fairly lengthy one. You’ll have to spend some hours to beat the scenario, especially when not toning down the difficulty. The prologue atmosphere is great and the slightly different building mechanics, due to not having to take into account heat sources, are very fun to work with. We can’t wait to see what the third DLC of the Season Pass has in store for us in the near future.
