After six long years of waiting, the successor of Geometry Wars: Retro has been released. The latest instalment in the series is called Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions. Your mission? Shoot everything in sight. Believe me, when we say everything, we truly mean everything. Engines? Check. Weapons? Double check.

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions

Story

Story wise there isn’t that much to say about Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions. Then again in games like this, the story does not matter that much. All there is to say is that you’ll be playing as a drone that has to shoot its way through different levels.

Graphics

This new instalment in the Geometry Wars series has gotten a big update compared to the previous one. The game is now equipped with 3D game boards and even though they are amazing to look at, you become quite dizzy after playing it for an hour or two. While playing through the different levels you will encounter a lot of enemy drones, all of them have a specific design. It can become quite bothersome if there are too many enemies, because there are so many different shapes on the game board. It is rather difficult at times to distinct yourself from your enemies. This means that there will be several occasions where your drone crashes into an enemy or object.

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions

Sound

While playing Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions the only thing you’ll be hearing is electronic music, no dialogues whatsoever. The music really fits the game and has a really active melody that gets your blood pumping while playing the game. Other than that, you will be treated to generic explosion and gunfire noises which puts you on edge even more.

Gameplay

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions is a twin-stick shooter in which the main goal is to survive as many waves of enemies as possible. The controls of Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions are very simple and straightforward, you only need your right and left stick and the right bumper. The left stick of your controller is used to navigate your drone, your right stick is used to fire bullets in all possible directions to destroy everything in your wake while the bumper is used to activate your supers.

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions

The game offers players an adventure mode, classic mode and a multiplayer mode. In adventure mode you’ll advance through 50 different levels of an increasing difficulty. Each level has a three star rating based on the score you get per level. In Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions you’ll also earn points which can be used to purchase upgrades for your drones. To earn those points you’ll get a lot of help from different drones, each with its own supers. A few examples of the supers that you will have at your disposal are automatically collecting Geoms, destroying random enemies and creating a giant black hole that sucks in everything that is nearby. The drones and supers that you have can be upgraded to increase its power.

Each new level that you unlock has a different mode ranging from Evolved to Rainbow, the difference being that the 3D game boards are shaped differently, there are various obstacles, life stealing walls and many more. Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions also has different bosses, these are rather hard to defeat but stunning to look at.

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions

As previously mentioned, Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions has 3D game boards, the depth from these game boards add a whole new experience to the gameplay. Because a lot of the game boards are in 3D, bullets will be flying everywhere and enemies will be coming at you from all possible directions. But the 3D game boards are not all that positive, it can become quite difficult to keep up with what is going on.

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions also offers a multiplayer which gives you the ability to play different levels with your friends.

For the people who miss the Geometry wars 2: Retro Evolved, Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions has included the classic mode which is a throw-back to the previous game. No 3D game boards and no supers. Overall a fun touch to present you with a change of pace or just some additional content.

Depending on the game mode you’re playing you will have to play differently. In adventure mode you’ll have to play a lot more aggressive because you need to get a certain amount of points to win stars, which then give you access to future levels.

Conclusion

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions is a worthy follower for the previous Geometry Wars: Retro with lots of repayable levels. The controls while playing feel very smooth, graphics are stunning, the audio is a blast to listen to and with all the different game modes there’s tons of gameplay for you to play. Simply put, Arcade action at its finest. Put your helmet on boys and girls, you’re in for a bumpy flight.
