Going to a tropical location may be something we all wish for at a certain point in our lives. Many of us would love to get away from crowded cities, walk along sandy beaches, look at the local fauna and flora, and just relax. Sadly, even a pretty view such as this may not be comforting enough to calm you down when you plummet to your death in a small airplane. This is what Horizon Line is all about, two people trying to pilot an airplane where the pilot has passed away during the flight, in the middle of nowhere with the ocean as far as the eye can see.

Horizon’s Line plot can actually be summarized in a few lines of text. We get introduced to Sara (Allison Williams), who leaves Jackson (Alexander Dreymon) behind without saying a single word. When a year later they have to meet up again, to celebrate the wedding of a mutual friend, an old spark ignites once again. Due to this, they miss the only ferry to the place where their mutual friend is getting married. To still get there, they jump aboard Freddy Wyman’s (Keith David) small plane. While Sara and Freddy are reminiscing about the past, and Jackson is sleeping in the back, things take a turn for the worse when Freddy suffers from a heart attack and dies mid-flight. Out of reach from the local communications tower, and with only the basics of flying a small airplane, Sara will have to take over. With a storm brewing on the horizon and damaged instruments, it’s a race against time to find a suitable spot to land, if the storm does not swallow them whole first.

The flow and pacing are somewhat as you’d expect from a movie such as this. You’ll just basically spend the entire movie in the cockpit of the airplane while new problems arise along the way. While never feeling extremely dragged out, it’s not a fast movie and outside of a few hectic events, nothing truly happens. You’ll just get a small introduction, a very long middle, and finally the conclusion which actually wraps itself up in less than five minutes.

Acting performances in Horizon Line are quite decent. Even though the dialogues are quite shallow, both main cast members put down a believable performance. Allison Williams plays the brave female lead, but also the one that clearly has commitment issues until she is thrown in a life or death situation. Jackson, who is played by Alexander Dreymon, is actually even more shallow in terms of personality. It’s clear that he is still very much into Sara, no matter what she does. Truth be told, with the limited backgrounds of the characters, not much more could be expected from both cast members.

As is common with movies such as this, the physical copy does not come with any special features whatsoever. It would have been nice to see how some of the scenes were handled, but other than that, everything very much speaks for itself. While this movie originally aired in cinemas in Sweden, it’s a TV movie from start to finish. These often don’t involve too many spectacular things to explore outside of the story.

Conclusion

Horizon Line isn’t a bad movie, but it isn’t a very good one either. It’s one of those movies that is ideal as background noise when getting some work done. The story itself is quite nice, but it’s a very slow burn, as nearly everything happens inside the cockpit of a very small plane. If you like the idea of two people who are left trying to pilot a plane, which will inevitably have to land, preferably not in the sea, then this movie can provide you with an entertaining evening. Actually buying this one for your collection? That is a different matter altogether.
