HyperX CloudX Revolver Gears of War – Hardware Review
We have been working with HyperX for quite some time now, and so far wa haven’t had any of their peripherals failing our tests. Nonetheless, we are always curious to see if things can get any better, and this must have been what HyperX was thinking as well. This time the developers decided to combine their CloudX model, with their Revolver model and spray a lick of ‘Gears of War’ on top of it. We were quite stoked to try out this special edition headset HyperX offered us.
Design
For the most part we get to see the Revolver’s design once more, albeit with a new lick of paint, the proper Gears of War decals and new finishing touches. The iron frame still stands quite tall in this design, but the red coloring certainly stands out as well. The suspended headband now has the Gears of War name embroidered on it instead of the HyperX name. Other fun details include the side stitching of the headband, which has been done subtly, and the black tone of the steel frame.
The earpieces both have the same protrusion in the middle as the original Revolver headset, but this time the ‘dent’ is neatly covered with the Gears of War logo in the shape of a cog. Even for those who aren’t really that fond of the Gears of War series, this headset simply looks badass.
We’re quite happy to see that the design of the microphone has remained unchanged, as it was already a huge improvement compared to the mic of the other Cloud models’ foam version. The ‘jagged’ design complements the Gears of War theme quite perfectly. Those who would rather use this device for music purposes, can easily detach the microphone and you’ll have yourself a spiffy ‘normal’ headset.
Comfort
Just like the normal Revolver this iteration of the CloudX also has a floating headband, which is loosely attached to the steel frame that carries the rest of the headset. Overall the steel frame, in combination with the headband, provide more than enough padding, and it doesn’t grip your head too tightly, making sure the device stays comfortable during longer gaming sessions. The ear pads are big enough to make sure your ears have enough room, and of course enough padding, to remain comfortable.
The enclosing ear cups seclude you from the outside world, but not too much, making sure you still hear what is going on around you. This is pretty much a case of personal preference, but sadly the device does not come with other cups which either block or allow more noise coming through. Simply put, this device has all the comfort features you’ll need for a hefty gaming experience.

Overview
As the name might suggest, the CloudX model was initially intended to service the Xbox One gamers, but rest assured this model is also great for PC gaming, thus you’ll be covered on two platforms. You’ll have two options of connecting the device, namely the original cable, which ends with a standard 3.5mm jack, which can be inserted in your PC, without the functionalities of the microphone, or in the controller of your Xbox One, which grants you audio and mic performance. That being said, when connecting the headset to your controller, you’ll have to make sure you have a ‘new’ controller, as the first generation of Xbox One controllers will need a small adapter to be inserted in the controller first, in which you then insert the headset plug before it actually works. If you’re aiming to use this device for PC gaming, you’ll just have to attach the extra extension cord, which has two 3.5mm jacks at the end, one for audio and one for the microphone. All that being said, the device is still a matter of plug and play.
You’ll be treated to a fairly simple control box which handles the basics, namely turn your mic on or off and/or regulate the volume settings. Perhaps some bass settings would have been nice, but then again, you have the basics covered, which is something that other brands sometimes tend to forget.
The sound quality is crisp, the bass settings are decent, and the overall sensation is very pleasant. Those who seek heftier bass settings will be disappointed, as it’s clear that this device tries to force the player to keep focused on everything that is going on around him in the digital world, thus instead of solely focusing on the movie, you’ll know when people are creeping up on you.
Conclusion
This limited edition CloudX Revolver Gears of War tribute by HyperX is a stunning device that will please both Xbox One and PC gamers with a headset that pays a proper homage to a great franchise and looks extremely good as well. Crisp sound quality, great design and a sturdy gaming companion make this device a topnotch asset to your gaming rig, albeit at a slightly higher price. Nonetheless, the investment pays off quite nicely when you’re in the midst of your next gaming session.
