With all the superhero movies and series coming out as of late, it’s hard to place iZombie in said picture, even though it’s also a tale from the DC universe. Nonetheless, the series profiles itself more as a detective show, rather than somewhere in the superhero scene, which is not necessarily a bad thing. We have come to know and love Liv for her quirkiness, her performance and the way she can adapt to playing many different characters. Last time she found herself in the basement of Max Rager, in the midst of feral zombies, together with Clive and Major, only to be saved by a private military organization in the hands of zombies. It seems that the world is slowly becoming a playground for  the undead, and not all of them seem to be as kindhearted as Liv.

iZombie season 3

Liv (Rose McIver), Clive (Malcolm Goodwin) and Major (Robert Buckley) make it out of the basement of Max Rager alive, albeit by discovering that the company has been taken over by a private military organization by the name of Fillmore-Grave, which exists solely out of zombie employees and mercenaries. Vivian Stoll (Andrea Savage) is at the head of said organization and she discloses her plan to Liv, that she wishes to make Seattle the zombie capital of the world, albeit before moving to a private island that could house all of the zombie population of the world. Things seem innocent from here on out, but hosting this many zombies will surely lead to trouble, and tension, as the ‘discovery’ day is dawning upon the zombie population. FG is sure that the humans will soon discover that there are zombies among them, and this is only proven right when a zombie family gets brutally murdered and more and more messages about ‘braineaters’ pop on message boards on the internet for those who wish to get rid of the zombies.

The flow of the series is pretty much the same as the previous seasons, where  the episodes deal with a case-to-case scenario, all while the bigger plot unfolds in the background. In this case it’s all about the zombie virus being known to the regular populace, which is also being noticed by the redneck gun crazed population of Seattle, who will not take the spread of the zombie virus lying down. The Fillmore-Graves corporation seems to have a special agenda up its sleeve, and that’s pretty much about it. The bigger picture is being uncovered at a somewhat slow pace, making this season a bit on the slow and boring side, even though the creators decided to fall back on a 13 episode formula, which is a great choice on their part. That being said, fans will surely find something worth appreciating, but those who felt that the second season was a bit bland, will probably have a hard time finding themselves in the flow of the third season.

Acting performances have remained pretty much the same as in the previous seasons, where it’s pretty much all about Liv and her closest friends, seeing her actual family is completely out of the picture. Rose McIver does a great job in portraying many different personalities and the quirks that come with them by digesting the brains of the many murder victims Seattle has to deal with. There are a few extra personas introduced with the coming of Fillmore-Graves, but it feels like they didn’t get that much time to shine outside of the cast of regulars.

You’ll have slim pickings when it comes to the special features of the DVD version, as you’ll only get to plow through deleted scenes and the Comic-Con panel of 2016, with the latter feeling a bit on the dated side. It would have been nice if there were some bloopers or some other extras present on this edition, as when you’re ready with the episodes, that’s just basically it. There’s no extra incentive to purchase the series if you’re a collector of some extra content.

Conclusion

If you really liked the previous seasons, and the overall format of the series, we’re sure that this season will still tickle your senses, as in many ways it’s more of the same. For those looking for a deeper thrill ride, the series is becoming somewhat stale and bland, as the bigger picture is only slowly being uncovered, all hidden behind the day-to-day cases our zombie mortician has to deal with. Nonetheless, still fun for the fans, less fun for those who already felt like giving up after the second season. That being said, we hope that the series will wrap things up in the next season, and that it will go out with the bang that this original story so much deserves.
