It’s no exaggeration to say that Square Enix is a master of rereleases and ports of its older, more popular titles, so we have seen many Final Fantasy titles ported to modern consoles, as well as the Kingdom Hearts games. These titles have been available on so many platforms since the series came to life on Sony’s PlayStation 2. Today, we’ll be taking a closer look at Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III], which is actually pretty much exactly the same as Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece, albeit for consoles. This means we’ll just be taking a closer look at the quality of this console release. If you want to read the full ins and outs of this collection, we suggest reading our Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece review by clicking here.

Just like Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece, Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] contains KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-, KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind (DLC). This means you’ll pretty much get all the available Kingdom Hearts content, except for Melody of Memory. It would have made this collection a bit ‘better’ or more unique if the spin-off rhythm game was included this time. Even so, if you have not played any of the games, or you only own one or two of the titles, then the collection is already worth looking into if Kingdom Hearts has always been something you’re curious about. You’ll get hours upon hours of content to play through, as this is a collection that will last you quite a while before you see the credits of all included games (and the movie). We do have to admit that the earlier entries show their age, even in their remastered forms. The story is also a bit convoluted, but it’s still fun to play through the epic story that unfolds.

As mentioned above, Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] is pretty much the console version of Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece. This means that there is no real new content to explore here if you’ve already played Integrum Masterpiece. You’ll get a keyblade based on the console version you’re playing, and that’s about it when it comes to exclusive content. We don’t really mind ports like this to reach a broader audience, but we do feel the price should also reflect this. Don’t get us wrong, these games are still amazing, even though some mechanics may feel a bit dated in the older entries, but we feel these titles should have dropped in price a lot already. That being said, the console versions run well; we didn’t encounter any issues with the PlayStation 5 version, and these are still timeless classics that deserve to be played by as many people as possible.

Conclusion

Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] is very much a great collection, especially if you haven’t played the original titles in years or if you’re new to the series. If you already own all the recent remastered versions, there is absolutely no reason to pick this one up. That being said, even after all these years, it’s an absolute blast to play through these (timeless) classics. Of course, over the years, the story has become a bit of a convoluted mess, but it’s still amazing to play through this iconic franchise. So, at the risk of repeating ourselves: get this one if you’re looking to play through the modern updated versions of these games or if you’re a newcomer to the series and neatly want most of the available Kingdom Hearts content in one place. If you fall into one of those two categories, you will absolutely not regret it. If you already own most what’s included in the collection, we suggest just picking up the missing pieces separately.
