Kinky & Cosy Compilatie – Comic Book Review
Kinky & Cosy have just passed our editorial office and we are already able to present you another issue of this mischievous duo. This time we had the chance to wade through the many pages of a compilation album that has bundled many different gags and puzzles. We were once again ready to enjoy some witty jokes wrapped in a very nice hardcover edition.
Just like the second album we recently reviewed, the format is still pretty much the same, namely it’s mostly about the three paneled gags. The punch line is often original, offering a certain amount of amusement, especially for those who like an illustrated form of slapstick humor.
Even though the albums are called Kinky & Cosy, they often involve other characters too, who (most of the time) have rather significant names, as they often make a mockery of their roles in the grand scheme. For example, with a mayor that is called ‘Trillion’, who just loves embezzlement or a criminal called ‘Neckshot’, most of the times it will steer you towards what you can expect of their personalities. Nonetheless, the jokes are often still fairly original, even with their revealing names.
The compilation is (sort of) divided in different chapters that (often) revolve around a specific character each time. It is quite fun to know that, for example, you can expect a batch of ‘dad’s’ adventures, after the supplementary sheet with the picture of Kinky & Cosy’s dad on it has appeared. This creates some kind of structure that makes it more fun to read the album.
Somewhere around the middle of the album the structure of the album changes from three paneled gags to two paged gags (twelve panels). This creates a fun change of pace throughout the nearly 300 paged compilation. Also, it shows that the collection of writers, who call themselves NIX, are able to do more than the typical three paneled jokes.
Just like in Kinky & Cosy #2, puzzles can be found inside the album, albeit a lot more than in the short second issue. Again, the puzzles are also filled with a simple dose of humor but they are actually solvable puzzles, which can entertain those who are looking for a tiny bit more than the brainless fun the compilation has to offer. The exalted dose of humor that went hand in hand with the small intermezzo in the middle that provided stickers to fill up empty landscapes on the surrounding pages was actually quite sublime. Whilst the stickers might not have been that witty, nor the landscapes, the instructions and ‘warning’ message were actually decent proof that the collection of writers are able to use their wit to create something funny, not in the form of typical gags.
The illustrations are pretty much the same as in the normal albums, as many of the jokes were already to be seen in earlier issues of the series, but the random art pictures or supplementary chapter sheets are actually very appealing. They add some extra life to the equation.
Conclusion
The Kinky & Cosy Compilatie (compilation) offers heaps of content, albeit fast reading content. Even though the album is very thick, you’ll be finished in a tad more than an hour, if you don’t solve all the puzzles on your way. Nonetheless, with the beautiful cover surrounding the actual issue, it’s clear that this issue will easily attract more attention than the normal ones. If you’re a fan of simple gags with a decent punch line, this one might be a fun one to take a look at. It seems that the two ladies might be able to charm their audience after all.
