Gadgets are a thing that pretty much defines the age we live in. We all love small goodies, be it useless or useful ones. KitSound gave us the opportunity to test out their newest gadget, namely the Mini Buddy speaker, which might prove to be an amusing and practical gadget.

ks1

In essence the Mini Buddy is a small speaker which you can carry around to use in combination with your cell phone, mp3 player, as a replacement of crappy laptop speakers and even handhelds, seeing you connect it with a standard 3.5mm jack. The speaker itself can also function as a keychain, but might be a bit oversized for daily use. In the end it’s still easy to carry around without much hassle.

The Mini Buddy comes in a variety of appearances like a bear, a pig, an owl and so on. We’ve had the chance to try out the little penguin that kind of resembles the Linux’ mascotte. When it comes to the overall design, these things look quite adorable. (That’s right, I said adorable.) They are pleasing to the eye, fun to place somewhere when not using them and they might just pass off as an actual keychain instead of a speaker. In the end some of the designs will be more neutral whilst others may be directed a tad more at girls.

Even though this speaker may be little, it still packs a punch. The clarity and volume of the sound that came out of the backside of this amusing looking penguin was surprisingly good and was equally as loud. Of course turning up the volume to its maximum capacity will cause disruptions in the quality of the sound, as is the same for pretty much all speakers.

My Penguin companion comes with an intern battery. The battery itself is rechargeable by hooking up the Mini Buddy to a computer with the USB-cable that comes with it. Overall you should be able to do several hours with the Mini Buddy before it needs to be recharged. Be sure to turn the speaker off when you stop using it – you wouldn’t want to go out with a depleted battery, would you?

A fun feature, this not so common speaker offers us, is some sort of link mechanism by which you can connect different Mini Buddies to each other. This will make them play music together to pack an even heavier punch. Will this be used a lot? No. Is it cool to have? Yes. In the end, it’s your chance to start your own fellowship of the Mini Buddies.

Own opinion

It’s easy to say that some form of amazement struck me when plugging in the device for the first time. It probably also had to do with the fact that the volume of my cell phone was turned up nearly to the max and I wasn’t expecting this little penguin to throw music at such a volume at me. Especially the fact of how clear the sound was at such a high volume was a clear indication that this speaker is an actual decent sound device.

Appearance wise the Mini Buddies look quite fashionable and may even summon a collection-spree for those who fall in love with such designs. That being said, I’m happy I received the Penguin for reviewing purposes, seeing it’s also a great piece to stand proudly on one of my consoles.

Conclusion

The KitSound Mini Buddy Speaker is one of those gadgets that will come in handy for those that are on the road much, or those who just happen to listen to their favorite tunes when they don’t have access to a radio or computer at that time. These nifty little devices will end up to be worth their money.
