LEGO: DC Super-Villains: doesn’t that sound exciting? For once, it’s not the heroes, but the villains who get their time to shine in this new LEGO game, and there are quite a lot of them. You’ll see the DC franchise in a completely different light, and the Joker, Harley Quinn and other bad guys become playable characters from the start. Quite, different, quite fun!

Story

We’ll try to keep things fairly simple here, but there is actually quite a complicated story behind LEGO: DC Super-Villains. Lex Luthor, Cheetah, Solomon Grundy and other villains manage to escape from prison. Among them is also a character called ‘Rookie’. This ‘Rookie’ has the ability to absorb super powers, and thus is highly dangerous. The Justice League try to stop them, but alas, they are too late. At the same time, the Joker and Harley Quinn break in to Wayne Tech and steal a mystery box, among other things. Where the Justice League couldn’t stop the bad guys at the prison, another superhero team now comes into play to stop the Joker and Harley Quinn. They call themselves the Justice Syndicate, and come from a parallel world. They claim to be the League’s replacement, but the Joker, Lex Luthor and the other villains soon realize that they aren’t what they say they are, but are in fact the Crime Syndicate. The villains now try to expose them for what they really are, but that proves to be a rather difficult task.

The story of this game gets quite complicated, quite fast. There are a hell of a lot of super heroes and super villains in this story, and frankly, it’s just a lot to keep up with. You’ll still be able to enjoy this title, but you might have to go through it once more if you truly want to capture the whole story.

Graphics

LEGO: DC Super-Villains looks very much like any other LEGO game, as of course, almost everything is made out of LEGO. The characters do look quite fun though, and have quite a lot of detail to them, despite being just ‘ordinary’ LEGO characters. The environments look quite detailed as well, even though every now and then, things seemed to be less in focus than they should have been. A lot of attention was paid to the coloring, giving the whole a grim atmosphere, which suits the game very well.

Sound

The music never really gets in the way of the gameplay, yet it gives the game that extra bit of atmosphere the story asks for. In the free play mode, it’s mostly the noises of the city you’ll hear, such as pedestrians talking, or tires creaking, while in the story mode, the music acts more as a way to elevate the story.

All conversations in this title are fully voiced, which is something we are always very partial to. The voice acting is done superbly, as we’re used to with the LEGO games. It’s still worth mentioning though, as despite the standard in the LEGO games being set quite high when it comes to voice acting, the makers still keep meeting up to it.

Gameplay

LEGO: DC Super-Villains is an action adventure game with some puzzle solving along the way. When playing the story mode, most of the time, you’ll be fighting off the enemy, be it, as is usual with LEGO games, in quite a ‘friendly’ way, so no blood, but just LEGO characters literally falling to pieces. As we mentioned before, the story isn’t that easy to follow, but it’s quite clear what you have to do, so even without knowing fully what’s going on, you’ll be fine. Next to the fighting, there are also some puzzles implemented into the game, but sadly, there isn’t much variation there. Once you know what’s expected, it’s just a matter of time, rather than intelligence for anyone to solve it and move on with the story.

A fun new addition is that you can create your own customized character at the beginning of the game, and this character will actually play a part in the story, and get more abilities as you move further into the story. You can make him look as serious or as funny as you’d like, and you can choose his kind of attack etc. as well.

The loading times are a bit long in this game, and in one level, we were just completely stuck, due to an elevator door that didn’t open. After looking for a way to open it for half an hour, we realized it was a bug, and had to start the level again, to then see that the door should have opened automatically right away. It was a rather annoying experience, but luckily, it was the only glitch we encountered during our gameplay.

Once you’ve finished levels in the story mode, you unlock free play mode, which means you can play the same levels again, but use whichever character you want, meaning you can find all kinds of hidden treasures when you come in a second time round. It’s something that is also incorporated in every LEGO game, but it does work to draw you in once more.

Next to the story mode, there is also the open world, which includes locations from the DC universe such as Metropolis and Gotham. Here you can just roam around, or do little quests, which will still take up a lot of your time if you really want to find and succeed in all of them. Perfect for completionists.

Conclusion

LEGO: DC Super-Villains is yet another one in the long line of LEGO games that were released over the years. As expected, the gameplay is pretty much the same as in other LEGO games, but the fact that a customized character was added here, made it a whole lot more fun. The story is quite complicated, but overall, that didn’t spoil the fun too much. The graphics are decent, the dialogues fully voiced and the gameplay the usual LEGO fun. We just can’t say that much wrong about this game. And honestly, we just loved being the villain for once.
