Scooby-Doo is a franchise that has been around for almost fifty years now, and is still going strong today. Many successful franchises have already gotten the LEGO treatment, and for Scooby-Doo, this is no different. This time, the gang goes to Blowout Beach, where many adventures await them. With a cast that have already voices many a Scooby-Doo episode, this is sure to become fun.

Scooby Doo

After solving yet another mystery, the guys of Mystery Inc. are in desperate need of a holiday. They decide to go to Blowout Beach, as the Blowout Beach Bingo Bash is about to start. The Bash is a party that lasts for three full days, and that is famous all over the world. Each year, at the end of the party, new captains of the Bash are chosen out of the people who proved to honor the party vibe the most during the three days before. This year, Velma (Kate Micucci) is determined that she and Fred (Frank Welker) will win, to prove to the others that they can be fun too.

The party will have to wait though. When Velma, Fred, Shaggy (Matthew Lillard), Daphne (Grey DeLisle) and Scooby-Doo (Frank Welker) arrive at Blowout Beach, the whole pier is deserted, making everything look a bit spooky. When they enter their hotel, the owner explains that ghost pirates ransacked the pier, chasing everyone off. Something is fishy about the story, and while they are there on holiday, and not to investigate, our friends can’t help but dig deeper into this strange story.

The very first Blowout Beach Bingo Bash took place in pirate times, when captain Brutamore Bash and pirate queen Bonnie Bingo Belle came home with an enormous treasure, and celebrated with everyone on the beach for three full days. Ever since, the tradition has been kept alive, even though the treasure was never seen again. Now, it’s a legend that is kept alive for tourists, as you can still go and visit the pirates’ ship the Salty Brick. But why did the pirates come back to Blowout Beach after hundreds of years, and how is it even possible that they did? High time for the gang to find out the spooky truth.

The story has quite a pleasant flow throughout the entire length of the film. A nice balance between mystery and fun keeps things airy, while there’s still enough excitement too. While this is a LEGO film, lots of elements from the original Scooby-Doo series remain, which makes it fresh, yet familiar to watch. We really don’t have any complaints about the story, as there is a good balance between fun and excitement, mystery and fear, while it’s never too predictable either. The animations are quite nicely done too, only adding more character to the film.

To be honest, we can’t complain about the voice actors either. None of them are new to the Scooby-Doo franchise, and it’s clear that they know very well what they are doing. Everything sounds very authentic and suiting the characters. The voice acting makes everything truly come to live, adding to the fun of the film.

There are three extras that come with this DVD release, and they are lengthy extras too. Not a making of or a gag reel this time, but three complete Scooby-Doo episodes, two from Scooby Doo, Where are you! which aired in 1969, and one from the later series Be Cool, Scooby-Doo. It’s very nice to have three complete episodes as a bonus, and also the mix between very old episodes and a quite new episode adds a nice touch. It’s clear that the franchise has still very much got it.

Conclusion

LEGO Scooby-Doo! Blowout Beach Bash offers a fun story that doesn’t bore due to the good balance between funny, more airy scenes, and the more mysterious detective work. LEGO did a good job picturing the original Scooby-Doo characters, and with the help of the experienced voice actors, this has become a very fun film to watch. Add in the three full Scooby-Doo episodes you get on top, and you have yourself a DVD that’s absolutely worth the buy.
