LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga – Review
Over the years we have reviewed many different LEGO games, and most of them proved to be quite fun. We have seen different universes get the LEGO treatment, as we were able to play through many key scenes of the Harry Potter series, as well as don a cape in the LEGO Marvel games. Now, however, we once again find ourselves in a galaxy far far away, playing through the nine iconic movies of the Star Wars universe. Even though we were treated to a very similar LEGO experience to the other LEGO games, we were quite impressed with the huge world that opened up before our very eyes.
Story
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will take players through the nine episodes of Star Wars. You’ll be able to choose your starting point, be it Episode I, Episode IV or Episode VII, each revolving around a different protagonist. When you play through one of the aforementioned episodes, you’ll unlock the next one, and so on. The game does take you through the story content of these movies, but it does so in a fairly shallow way, only having you play through key scenes of that particular movie.
Those who haven’t watched all the movies yet will find it hard to fully grasp the story that is presented here. You’ll get to play through many of the movies’ key scenes, and these have all been infused with the classic LEGO humor we’ve come to love from the other LEGO games. We would have loved for some scenes to be fleshed out a bit more, but as a whole, the presentation is great.
Graphics
Graphically this is easily the most impressive LEGO game we have seen so far. Not only are the animations handled superbly, but players will also be treated to a massive roster of character models, amazing backdrops, vehicles you can use, and so on. The game has so much content you can explore, and the realistic set pieces blend nicely with LEGO-built items. The game respects the source material while adding a few fun items to the mix to give it the already-iconic LEGO games atmosphere. We were really impressed by the graphical design.
Sound
Equally impressive to the graphical design is the sound design. During your playthrough, you’ll hear many authentic Star Wars sound effects and musical scores, but you’ll also be able to experience a lot of original voice work in the game. Basically all of the game’s dialogues are fully voiced, even those you’ll have with random NPCs that just hand out small side quests. We were absolutely surprised by the massive amount of side quests in the game that each come with their own snippets of voiced dialogues.
Gameplay
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is a typical LEGO adventure game in which you’ll have to play through story-related content, in order to unlock the Free Play mode to collect all the game has on offer. The offset is straightforward, as you’ll have to play through the story once, to enjoy the base experience, to then explore the world further with all your unlocked characters, collecting LEGO studs, collectibles, and new characters. With these new characters, you’ll be able to reach new areas and find even more collectibles, as each character type has its own skills and abilities.
Truth be told, there is not much more to the game than exploring, playing through story levels, and collecting items. We found this LEGO adventure a very therapeutic experience, as we soon found ourselves playing through the ‘free play’ segments more than actually trying to complete the story. It was a lot of fun just walking around the different environments, finding collectibles, unlocking new characters, and just seeing how much stuff we could destroy.
The game is very accessible for younger gamers, as well as a more mature audience with absolutely no gaming experience. The controls are easy, and more than often the puzzles are fairly straightforward. The game does get a lot more fun when you can play it locally with a friend or family member in the split-screen mode. The latter does take away a bit from the players’ overviews, but the fun you’ll have makes up for it. The only things we found somewhat awkward were the Jedi levitation controls and the very annoying camera angles when you would run through small corridors. We also noticed a lack of items we could build when playing through levels. The older games often had us destroy structures to then build something else, and this title has very few of these segments.
Conclusion
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is an absolute delight to play through. Fans of older LEGO games and Star Wars will be able to explore the galaxy far far away at their heart’s content. Even though the game does have you play through the nine main movies of the Star Wars universe, we do have to say that this game will please achievement hunters and collectors more, as LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has so much side content for players to delve into. We played through the episodes and still found ourselves coming back to find more and more collectibles. That being said, we do advise watching all the films first to truly appreciate this meaty LEGO Star Wars adventure.
