Lonely Mountains: Downhill – Eldfjall Island DLC – Review
If you haven’t already read our review of the base game of Lonely Mountains: Downhill, you can best check it out right here. There we already talked about the extra mountain, which is the Eldfjall Island where you get challenged by the trickiest courses, steep inclines and many different routes. It is best to tackle the original game first because doing the trials on your basic bicycle will surely be a hardcore challenge on its own.
Eldfjall Island is the fifth course that is immediately available upon purchase. Nonetheless, it is advised to first clear the base game as you will need to practice and unlock bikes that are better suited for the harsh conditions of the Eldfjall mountain. It starts with a short introduction movie with your character rowing in a small boat to the new island. This legendary Eldfjall Mountain is known for its treacherous steep hills and is, therefore, a Walhalla for bikers around the world.
It plays out just like the courses you will explore in the original game, yet these trials are longer and way more difficult. You will have to conquer many jumps, small paths and tricky slopes to find your way back to the camp. On the volcanic island, there is a mix between rocky paths, constructed bridges, fallen trees and long jumps. Especially the jumps can be fatal if you still drive the stock bike. That being said it is possible to clear these levels but it really is a challenge, and it’s just more fun to play the content in its intended order.
Next to the new area and new outfits to unlock, such as pro gear, new paint jobs and a Viking ensemble, there isn’t much more to this bite-sized DLC. If you enjoy(ed) the base game and want an ultimate experience on a map that is unforgiving, yet astonishingly beautiful, then you might want to consider purchasing this pack.
Conclusion
While the DLC only comes with a few cosmetic upgrades and a new map, it sure brings a really interesting mountain to the game. The courses are unforgiving and will ask for all your skills to successfully make the descent from the volcanic route straight into your camp. If you like(d) the base game and fully completed it then it might be a great addition, but it feels like it comes at a great cost both in retail value, as well as the relaxation aspect of the base game. Nonetheless, this might as well be a proper expansion for those looking for some added difficulty.
