Mushroom Men: Truffle Trouble is the latest entry in the Mushroom Men saga. After Red Fly Studios successfully got their game crowdfunded through Gambitious, they’re now bringing their finished(?) version of Mushroom madness.

Mushroom Men: Truffle Trouble

Story

You are Pax, a truffle who’s living a peaceful life in his house. One day you get a love letter, but it’s far from someone you’d expect: it’s from the Truffle Princess! You get scared immediately because you’ve heard tales about the Princess, so you decide to burn the letter. When you’re in bed that night, you suddenly wake up because your furnace is acting up very strangely. Without warning, you find yourself in a nightmare where the Truffle Princess is trying to catch you so she can make love to you, but you don’t want that at all! You’ll have to race across your dream using the best of your abilities in order to get to the bed at the end and get out of the dream.

Graphics

The graphics in Mushroom Men: Truffle Trouble are pretty good. All the levels are themed according to what part of your house you’re playing in and the backgrounds reflect this as well. Pax, the Truffle Princess and all of the enemies look good too, which makes the game a nice experience graphics wise. The game is also very light weight so it doesn’t need a very good PC to run it, making it even better suited for all kinds of gamers.

Sound

When it comes to sound effects and music, Mushroom Men: Truffle Trouble isn’t the best in the business. They’re not horrible, but they wont make you remember the game for the good sound either…

Since you’re being followed around until you’re captured, the music is fast paced and goes well with the rest of the game. It doesn’t seem overwhelming or underwhelming at all, it’s just there, but not that spectacular. Sound effects are a bit better, having the screams of the Truffle Princess while she’s running after you is pretty hilarious when you first start playing.

Gameplay

Last but not least, the gameplay! Here’s where the game would stand out if it didn’t have annoying or game breaking glitches.

But before we jump into that, let’s explain the mechanics. Pax himself is pretty easy to control. You can move him around, run, jump, push and pull boxes, pick up boxes and perform an aerial attack that smashes yourself into the ground. The goal of the game is to get to your bed at the end of the level while solving various puzzles and killing monsters that stand in your way. Also, you’re being chased by the Truffle Princess who destroys the level behind you as she gets closer! If you’re not a fan of completing puzzles against time, you can put it on easy mode, which makes the Truffle Princess disappear. There’s also the option for normal and hard mode.

Alongside plain running, Pax can also transform into different forms. The first couple of levels you’ll only have access to the ghost form, which gives you a short immunity against monsters, allowing you to ignore them and keep on running. Later on, you’ll get access to the spider form, moth form and mole form, which are all pretty obvious. In order to activate these forms, you need to collect energy. You can do this by killing enemies and collecting spores. Spores also account to the amount of stars you’ll get at the end of the level, so try to grab as many as you can!

Besides normal levels, you can also access bonus levels, which provide you with a bigger challenge. In order to access bonus rooms, you’ll have to beat all of the levels in a room with 3 stars, which is not an easy task!

While the game does have its strong points, it’s easily ruined by all the glitches that are still present in the game. Sometimes when jumping off a platform just as the Princess destroys it, the game simply spawns you back at the start of the level. You obviously can’t move forward at this point because the Princess destroyed the path, but if you jump on the bed again you suddenly complete the level. This is just one of many glitches the game has and it’s a shame that there are so many.

Conclusion

Mushroom Men: Truffle Trouble proved to be a very good game at first, but it soon became clear that a lot of glitches are still present. But to give you a heads up, this review was written about a week before release, so the game might have been fixed by the time you get to play it. Overall, it’s a challenging puzzle game and while it might lack a very important feature (online leaderboards?!), it’s still pretty fun to play once you get into it.
