Even though we already reviewed several of the LEGO Ninjago seasons, we were still curious about the next one in line, season five. It seems our friends will have to fight evil again, to save Ninjago, as well as the other realms. Nya finally trains to become a master herself, while Sensei Wu intends to lead a more quiet life. There’s enough going on to keep everyone satisfied, that’s for sure.

After the ninja successfully beat master Chen’s army in season 4, Sensei Wu (Paul Dobson) decides to retire and open up a tea shop called ‘Steep Wisdom’, in which all ninja have a share. Despite their success against master Chen, Lloyd (Jillian Michaels) is feeling down, as in the process, his father got banished to the Cursed Realm. He doesn’t have much time to grieve though, as the police summon him to help with a theft at the museum. Nonetheless, when he arrives there, it appears to be all a scam and Morro (Andrew Francis), the master of wind, who escaped from the Cursed Realm under the form of a ghost, takes over Lloyd’s body.  Because he stole the harness at the museum, he can now also summon other ghosts from the Cursed Realm to assist him in battle. Morro wants to become the green ninja, which is why tricked Lloyd, but he also needs to find the last resting place of the first Spinjitzu master, Sensei Wu’s father. In order to do so, he needs Sensei Wu’s staff, as it contains clues as to where to find his grave.

The ninja do their best to protect the staff, but because Morro is now inside Lloyd’s body, the powers of the other ninja have faded. They have to admit defeat when Morro takes a hold of the staff, but luckily Sensei Wu still managed to make an imprint of the information on the staff, thus they have the clues to finding Sensei Wu’s father too. The first clue leads them to a scroll about Airjitzu, a technique they will have to master in order to be able to fulfill the difficult task at hand. When they find out that Ronin (Brian Dobson) stole the scroll from the library not so long ago, they go and pay him a visit in Stiix, a small town built on water.

While the ninja try to figure out the clues on the staff before Morro does, Sensei Wu starts training Nya (Kelly Metzger) back at the tea shop, to become the master of water. Once she’ll be able to manipulate water, she could be a great asset to the ninja, since water is lethal for ghosts. For the time being, the ninja will have to manage on their own though, as Nya still has a long way to go.

As usual, there is one bad guy throughout the entire season, who needs to be stopped by the ninja. This time Morro takes that role upon him, and he makes sure that each episode has a nice flow and quite some action. There are a lot of things happening each episode, all within a fairly short timeframe, and because of that, you do need to pay good attention if you truly want to understand the complete story. Nonetheless, this also means that there is quite some story value, that goes a little further than your average ‘good guy battles bad guy, good guy wins’.

The characters are still very recognizable from former seasons and often add in a funny note, for example when they criticize each other when something goes wrong, or when they try to figure out who would be the best leader now that Lloyd is not around. They often act like little children, but are also very responsible when it comes to protecting Ninjago and each other, all of which makes them very likeable.

Voice acting really supports the story, as the characters really come to life and their personalities get even clearer. Most of it is done in a very lively manner, also adding to the drive that runs through this entire season.

There are no extras on this DVD release, which doesn’t come as a surprise, given none of the former seasons had any extras. Here too, it’s not the end of the world, yet it could have added a nice touch to the series.

Conclusion

Season 5 of the LEGO Ninjago series flows at quite a steady pace, with lots of action going on in each episode. As usual, the series also provides some jokes that make the whole thing a bit more airy, and with good voice acting and a decent storyline this is a series that will appeal to both young and old.
