Detective, or rather crime series have been quite omnipotent the last few years, especially shows like NCIS and CSI keep getting great ratings, even though these series bring nothing new to the table. Person of Interest decided to cut things short, as it recently concluded with a fifth, shorter season (and it will probably remain as such). Nonetheless, before we get ahead of ourselves, we first take another look at the fourth season, which was recently released on DVD and Blu-ray. The struggle between ‘The Machine’ and ‘Samaritan’ is ongoing, especially now Samaritan is up and running.

Person of Interest Season 4 Cover

Harold (Michael Emerson), John (Jim Caviezel), Shaw (Sarah Shahi) and Root (Amy Acker) all went into hiding after Samaritan went live. While they are currently protected by The Machine making it rather impossible for Samaritan to track them, they have to act like normal civilians, who do normal day jobs and who seemingly follow the law, thus no more heroics. Harold is currently doing work as a professor while Shaw is giving make up advice but it seems John drew the lucky straw as he is currently a detective. All these jobs help them build up a day-to-day life and avoid the watchful eye of Samaritan.

Before long numbers start coming back in, and while Harold wanted to leave everything behind, he quickly changes his mind and even sets up a new base, after The Machine showed him where to go. Thanks to this their operations can begin again, and with the help of a local hacker, they can even avoid detection in certain areas of the city. Nonetheless, while they already have Samaritan to worry about, a new gang shows up, who is aiming to go big, rather than start up slowly. The ‘Brotherhood’ is responsible for a giant shipment of experimental weapons and it seems that John and the rest of the Machine’s agents will need the help of Elias (Enrico Colantoni), the crime lord, who they crossed paths with in the past. Nonetheless, it seems that both parties have a certain respect for one another and Elias decides to help.

Person of Interest Season 4 - 1

Overall the flow is pretty much comparable with the previous seasons, but perhaps, the loose case episodes are represented too much in this penultimate season. While the main story revolving around The Machine and Samaritan trots along, it sometimes gets a bit neglected underneath all the cases John, Harold, Shaw and sometimes Root have to tackle. That being said, the subplot with Elias and Dominic from the Brotherhood proves to be a very interesting distraction in this season. Nonetheless, it would have been nice to round up certain things, especially seeing this season has a rather mild season finale.

This season puts an emphasis on the fact that even agents of good, can’t always do the right thing or that they will sometimes need to trade in the bigger evil for a lesser kind. This makes the series a lot more humane and also takes away the ‘superhero’ reputation from the main characters, which makes it easier for the viewer to relate to them. It’s clear more attention was spent to character evolution this season.

Cast wise not that much has changed and thus acting performances remain pretty much consistent with the rest of the series. Winston Duke does a formidable job in playing a new villain during this fourth season, while Enrico Colantoni creates an extra dimension to the crimelord Elias, who is slowly blooming more into a likeable character, rather than an overconfident mobster.

Person of Interest Season 4 - 2

While the special features on this Blu-ray release of the fourth season aren’t that plentiful, they do add a bit of extra content to the mix. You’ll be able to watch the Comic-Con panel with the cast, the stereotypical gag reel and two short features that revolve around the music of the series and a tour through John, Harold and Shaw’s new base of operations. Nothing overly fancy, but it does the trick.

Conclusion

Person of Interest: Season 4 remains on par with the previous seasons, yet the finale of this one wasn’t that amazing, especially given the fact that the fifth season is the last one, which only counts roughly half the episodes of the other seasons. Nonetheless, if you enjoy the case based episodes, gang wars and a grand battle between two omnipotent artificial intelligences, you will not be disappointed.
